Does anyone know where I can get a cat delete pipe for my 95 PSD? Can't afford a whole exhaust right now, so I want to get the cat out of there so it will flow better? After that maybe a new muff. Not sure I want to do the down pipe yet, don't really like the idea of having to massage the firewall to get it to fit.
Yes, article in Diesel Power went over all the inspection details for california and a couple other stricter states.
I'd look that up for your county first before a cat delete. They look for tampering of emmissions equipment and do a snap test looking for visible smoke in most places in cali.
IMO you should just gut the cat instead of getting rid of it. Some guys have welded a piece of straight pipe through it but I think it would look modified that way if they inspected it. Better to just get it hot, drop it down, and then knock all the internals out with a crowbar or something.
Then later you can put in a 4" exhaust after the cat or a 4" high flowing cat, and get a straight-through design muffler like a glasspack (i have a 4" glasspack that's only 8" long on mine to pass NC safety inspection)
As far as the downpipe goes, you don't need to massage the firewall much. Cut the body seam and bent it up. Or rent a portapower and bend it a little. I just used a crowbar and a piece of wood to bend it. It'll really help the truck breathe better.
Brownie the bad thing with CA is if it isn't CARB certified you fail the visual inspection, so you are extremely limited on what you can or can't install. Even a boost gauge can cause you to fail!
What I read was that diagnostic gauges are allowed, such as boost, egt, trans temp, etc. You can even get away with aftermarket turbos as long as they LOOK stock.
But if you have one of the newer programmers like the Edge CTS that has the gauges built in you can be failed even if you are just using the gauge part of it. They recommend removing any chip you have and taking the programmers out before inspection.
I forget that I get Diesel Power magazine about a month ahead of time with my subscription, but definately get the next issue and read the article about the emissions testing.

I have heard stories of guys getting failed because the boost gauge T didn't have a CARB number on it... probably avoided by finding a tech that has a little common sense. So glad I don't have to deal with Cali emissions crap!
I remember Cali emissions being a PIA! I lived there for a short while once, and it was a nightmare! I went out and bought a 69 F-100 just to avoid the mess, as anything built prior to 1973 was emissions exempt.
Living here in Az, there are emissions, but I dont know how much issues go with it, as I just moved here and kept my home address in Wy, where there are no emissions. I was curious about switching to plates here, but wanted to get specs on it first. I like the idea of the moddified cat (Brown Falcon) and am considering this as well.. LOL!
As far as I know CA is "smog" testing 98 and newer. My 95 shouldn't have a problem, I don't want to run a programmer, so I am going to keep the stack downpipe and maybe do a downpipe back exhaust when I can afford it.
