sanderson headers
Yeah the more i look at your engine, it's quite obvious that you've got alot of angle on it. Front to back, our engines appear to be mounted in about the same spot. Almost the exact clearance at the firewall. Your rear cross member is pretty much the same as mine, just a tad lower because you're under the frame. Yep... If I'm gonna run headers, I'm gonna have to tear this sucker down and get creative. May even have to move the engine over an inch or so. Ah, well... it is, what it is for now. Thanks again for sharing all the pics. Very handy to reference from. When i go to remedy this situation of mind, i hope you won't mind if I need to bug you again for pics and whatnot.
no problem
Something else I just noticed, on your trans crossmember it looks like you notched it for the trans. Mine sits well above the crossmember, I'm using a energy suspension trans mount. Pic is of the old trans/engine but it's still the same.

Yeah i did have to notch mine just a bit. i contacted TD and they said the crosmember I have is an older one and that the newest ones will have a relief just below the tail housing. Thought that was kinda odd. Rather than buying their mount that said I should be able to use any C6 mount provided it had 2 studs or used two bolts to secure it to the crossmsmber. So I just went to NAPA and bought the most common trans mount of that style they carried (used in the most rigs). Figured it'd make it an easier part to get if it failed on the road out of town. What application was that Energy Susp trans mount for? It definately sits the tranny up a little higher.
I bought the energy one because the old trans leaked like crazy and rubber would have died. Also I had to raise it up, if you look close at the front corners of the trans pan and how close it's to the old trans crossmember. Someone crashed in the corners and then brazed the the whole mess. I raised the engine/trans, put a new trans pan on and made the old trans crossmember a drop out.
They only made 1 or 2 trans mounts for fords. This is the one I have:

Oh very nice!! Got dimensions and all there. I'll have to find some time next week to compare it to what I have. I'd still have to lift the engine up if i switch tranny mounts. I'm sitting right on the 3* slope back mark now. But his will be helpful as once i figure out what I'm gonna do with the engine, i'll probably need to raise up the tranny aswell.
Yeah the P.O. completely cut out that crossmember on my truck. i don't know if it shows in any pics, but i had to re-route the brake line all the way to the front crossmember (under the radiator) and then back around to the passenger front wheel. When i got it, it was just hangin in the wind under where the tranny would be. Wasn't a tranny installed when i got it. I thought about adding that cross member back in, but just looking at what i was workig with, it didn't look like it'd even clear the tranny pan anyways.

Is the engine mount crossmember directly above the axle? Obviously I have a different engine from you two, but have a similar crossmember/mount. The type that is universal, that is has the socket type endplates that bolt inside the frame channel and allow you to cut the ends of the crossmember to length, and/or off set the engine is the type I'm using and is sold by Mid Fifty for most popular engines. Mine is well away from the axle tho. If yours is above the axle, make sure the axle won't contact it before the axle is firmly on the bump stops. One way to check is to wrap a chain around under the axle and over a bottle jack sitting on top the frame on each side. Jack the axle towards the frame on both sides until the bump stops are firmly against the axle and check clearance.
If you have an extra front crossmember behind the one the radiator horseshoe sits on, remove it to gain a lot of extra room, it's not needed for strength with the tubular mounts.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to put in a dropped axle and raised springs. You might consider the down and forward springs and lengthened drag link that MF sells they lower the front and move the axle ~ 1 1/4" further forwards.
I was going to take mine out but I looked on here and everyone was saying to keep it or the cab area will have some problems with cracking. I routed my brake lines the same way and fished it through the old trans crossmember mounting to get to the master, but I did find a place that sold the coiled shield for the brake lines.
AXracer: My engine crossmember is above the sump and close to the trans inspection cover, it just looks like it above the axle in the pictures. Plus all the pics are funky looking because my driveway is sloped pretty good.
