what am i missing here?

what am i missing here?

my heads are off of my 78 460. ive got the rockers and pushrods removed. that leaves the valve springs. i bought a valve spring compressor and all i can get the valve to do is move up and down. how do i get the spring off of it? thanks for any help guys.

You need to hit the retainer with a hammer first to break the keepers loose from the retainers, then try the compressor. If you get a real sticky one try putting something under the valve to keep it from moving, then smack the retainer.

I always put a socket on the retainer and hit the socket a few sharp raps..
