Hello
Tonight I was trying to take out the valves on my 352 out of a 1965 F-350. When I compress the valve springs, I cannot get the valve retainer lock washer thing (name?) or the valve retainer out. Is there some sort of trick to doing this? I dont know if all valve retainer assemblies are basically the same, but on mine, the lock washer on it is actually 2 pieces around the valve stem. Do you have to hold the valve up and push the valve retainer down after you compress the spring to get the valve retainer lock washer off? My chilton doesnt help at all, it just says "compress spring and remove valve retainer lock washer and valve retainer" so I am assuming it should be simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Garrett
Nothing like stuck FE keepers. (the two piece thingies)
A old mechanics trick is to tap the valve head sharply with the wooden end of a hammer while holding on to the valve spring compressor. I then use a daub of white lith grease on my finger tip to capture the little buggers.
The grease does a decent job of putting them back in too.

The oils varnish and oil sludge makes for a good glue.
First make sure you have the valve compressed enough you need about 3/16'' of compression at the valve keeper to remove it. Try tapping it with a wood hammer or a brass one.
