This question would be for the automatic transmission expert's here. Just purchased a 1995 E4OD, for a C6 take-out / upgrade, and just wanted to touch base with some knowledge and wisdom before proceeding. With the E4OD out and laying on the floor, and with torque converter removed, SHOULD EITHER THE INPUT SHAFT OR THE OUTER SHAFT TURN FREELY BE HAND ??? Neither do, and just checking to ask if there may be a problem with the unit. ALSO, the e4od came with a torque converter, so I'm covered there, but need to know if I can use the flexplate bolted to the motor, that came with the C6 ??? Thanks
No they should not turn freely by hand if fully engaged, but the input shaft can be pulled out by hand. If it's not shoved all the way back to where the splines are engaged, then it would turn freely.
Hey, thanks jas88 .... thats exactly what the situation is. I could pull the input shaft completely out, but when fully inserted into the splines, it would not budge. Thanks for the useful info. Can I use the flexplate the came with the motor / c6 setup?
jas88, the truck in question is an factory stock 1988 4X4 F-350 with the 460 / 7.5L EFI and a C6 tranny. I'm fairly certain from what I've read that the C6 and the E4OD share the same flexplate and bolt pattern, but wanted to check on advise from fellow members of this site. The E4 I picked up is fairly complete, has the transfer case mounting bracket with pivot bolt, wiring harness connected to the neutral safety switch with the connector on the other end to plug into the harness that will go to the transmission controller. Also has the 4X4 tailshaft adapter to use with the existing BW 1356. And of coarse as mentioned above, the torque converter was also included! I would rather not perform a rebuild on the tranny at this time, but would like to install new front and real seals and replace the o-ring that goes on the front outer shaft, which I believe is refered to as the stator, but not sure. Any idea who might have this o-ring ( green ) without buying a complete seal / gasket kit ??? Thanks for responding to this post, I appreciated it.
The only place you are probably going to get just that one o-ring would be the Ford dealer IMO. Be sure to replace the converter seal with either a black or blue one, don't use a gray one.
