E4OD Filter/Fluid Change Questions

I picked up 4wheel drive 92 F150 with 167,000 miles. The E4od Transmission shifts great and I have no issues, but the fluid is brown. And when checking when it's hot and running in N, it is at the full mark ,but it looks like there are small bubbles on the stick.
I have no idea if fluid/filter were ever changed on the truck.

Am I opening up a Pandora's box doing a complete Trans. & Torque converter fluid/filter change and using Dex/Mercon fluid.

My question is because I had a 75 Thunderbird back in 1979 that I bought with 90,000 mi. with a C6. The Trans shifted fine. I took it to a shop and had a fluid /filter service done, ( Type F fluid). I figured it would be good preventive maintenance. A week later I came out one morning and had bright red tranny fluid leaking out from under the car. So now I had to get it re-built.

With my mileage and not knowing trucks history . My concern is changing fluid/filter will cause leaks from new trans. fluid. ( "I was told the new fluid cleaned cracks in seals in my Thunderbird's C6 was what started it leaking")

So again
Am I opening up a Pandora's box doing a complete Trans. & Torque converter fluid/filter change. And can I cause any other unknown surprises .
Or should I just leave well enough alone with my E4od.

What they told you on the T bird was a pack of lies. It isn't true now, either.

New fluid won't hurt a good transmission, but it won't prevent a damaged one from dying, either.

Lie's. Now that I'm older that doesn't surprise me anymore.

Mark thank you for your reply. Based on having it for 4 months and driving it everyday it works great. No noise , chatter and shifts as well as my 4wd. 92 Nite.
That's the only thing I can say for me to call it a good transmission. I know fluid changes are good for longevity and have had no issues in the past with our new cars doing it at every 30,000 or so miles.

I understand you can only go on what information I'm giving. But with that being said. If it was yours, with the info I have given would you do it. Would you use Dex/Mercon . And should I do anything else beside draining the torque converter ,pan, filter and gasket. ?
Eg. would I need to drain the pan again after a few hundred miles

This FTE web site is a great source for information. It has given me great help maintaining and repairing my Nite and this 92 . I always appreciate the knowledge on here. Helps an old dog like me very much

I would change the fluid. I would use MERCON V.

You can drain the pan and torque converter, or you can do this: Fluid Exchange

If you do drop the pan don't change the gasket. It is reusable (assuming it is the factory rubber gasket) and is far better than the gasket you would get at a parts store. Changing the filter isn't necessary.

I will change it. I'm going to drop the pan so I can put in a drain plug and will keep gasket if its original. In your Fluid exchange link it said Ford does not recommend ever changing the filter? Don't you think it's just wise to do now. I bookmarked Fluid exchange and will use your replacement idea in the future with Transmissions that I have already changed out the fluid . Thank you for your help.

If it makes you happy, change it. It doesn't need to be changed unless the trans is bad enough to need a rebuild.
