Just think with all of the Californians moving to Oregon by the time you retire we will have the same stupid laws. Not saying we don't have our share of morons now, oh well you get the drift.

Have you tried something simple like calling Midas or your local muffler shop? There has to be CARB compliant replacement cats out there. Those things do wear out after all. Maybe another CA guy has a kitty you can borrow off his truck for testing purposes.

Send me a 4' piece of exhaust and I'll send you my cat. It's been hollowed out though and beat up.

Do you have an Early '99 or Late '99? The reason I ask is because my E'99 truck did not come equipped with a CAT, Also did your truck come from the Factory with CA emissions? In 2001 I finally changed my State Residency from CA to NV and Clark County has more stringent smog laws than CA i.e Clark County follows Federal Smog Act laws enacted in 1967 unlike CA where they have a 25 years or older smog exempt rules IIRC. Additionally to top things off Clark CO, NV requires a yearly smog on every vehicle unlike CA where it is Bi Yearly, again IIRC. So I am thinking about changing my address to Nye County like Parhump for example.

Dad still lives in CA and said that Oregon Taxes are cheaper but the Johnnie Law is really cracking down on CA residents with OR tags. I don't know about smog Laws.
I think South Dakota is the best place to set up a P.O. box mailing address for both Vehicle Tax and Smog reasons IMO.

Excellent point Chris!! Reps to you!!

I remember some years back I had to have the CAT replaced on the wife's Intrepid. Took it to Meineke, and it was under $200.00, with warranty. Her O2 sensor was bad; wasted the CAT in less than a year. Meineke warrantied it, told me about the sensor, and I had it fixed.

You can probably also get away with a 6.0 cat with a little modding and some reducers...

not about cats so much (IF it did not come with one), but I just recently had the go around about the muffler. I gave up and put it back on.

Those cats are for gassers. Nothing over a 5.4.
Ford is the only place you can get a Ca. Cat for our trucks.
I called one of the cat warehouses yesterday. He told me that the aftermarket has cats that will work on our trucks, but none of them have been approved by CARB.
I talked to a 6.0 guy today. He is getting geared up for the same issues. He cut his cat off right after buying the truck and tossed it in the dumpster.

After I get a cat and get everything all ironed out I'm going to start my own "loan a cat" program for all of my FTE brothers (and sisters).

The loaner program (or rental program to recoup some cost) sounds like a good idea. Why don't you call or email Joey at Terminator Engineering and see if he can find you a kitty to borrow or buy.

Is there any way to invest money in something like a catalytic converter futures market?

I'll hazard a guess they are going to see a steep spike in value in California.

Brilliant. Glad you mentioned the Ex, too bad I can't rep you for the reminder, have to spread it around first. The Excursion came with the GPCM, and I believe the rest of the CA emission stuff, so they should have a cat too. We also have an Excursion section here at FTE, so that would be a good place to start a new thread looking for a CAT.

Unless you're wanting to upgrade the exhaust on your wife's Ex. For what a new cat costs and as cheap as a 4" exhaust system is, you might get a pretty cheap upgrade.
