Oil Pressure Question

I have a question. I changed my oil pump and I still have no pressure. Could it be the sensor? Would the sensor make my Check engine light come on and shut down the truck? Haven't started the truck in over a year cause i cant afford a new engine. Could it be something so simple?

always start with the simple things first. also pull codes, Ford Fuel Injection has instructions on how.

One brief question... how long has the engine actually been run with a zero pressure indication? I ask because any engine that has not been run in over a year and then run with zero oil pressure would start "complaining" rather quickly after starting... I'm talking minutes at most.

The best way to be certain is to connect a mechanical gauge to the engine instead of the electronic one. Hard to fool a mechanical gauge.

Let's see, you've replaced the oil pump and you suspect the sensor is bad because it shows no pressure? Logic would say spend the few bucks a new sensor would cost to see if that fixes the problem.

The check engine light is for emissions, comes on when the engine is polluting, not when the engine is tearing itself up from no oil pressure. You'll know when the engine is running without any oil pressure, won't you? I mean if you can change an oil pump then ...

The dash oil gauge is merely a sexy idiot light, whereas it will move the needle with only 6-7 psi of oil pressure. So you really should invest in a mechanical gauge (I use Stewart Warners). If you don't want to do that, the sender is only about $13.00---but you'll wanna probably check the dash gauge first. To do that, have your friend sit in the truck while you pull the sender wire off the sender, stick a 4" piece of wire into the terminal end, and then ground the other end to the block. Now have your friend turn the ignition key to RUN (NOT START) for a second---or less. If the gauge is good, the needle will peg out all the way to the right. But if it doesn't move, your gauge is dead.......

(here's my quick, ghetto-ish gauge install on the '87---fugly, but functional)

Oh man, that install IS ugly... but what can you do? Ford decided to place useless idiot lights... When i install new gauges, i'll try to place them on the A-pillar trim. Or maybe somewhere i can look at some ugly arrangement but my passengers can't.

well while I was driving the truck died. My brother brought me a quart of oil and i crossed my fingers it would start after cooling down. It did. After I replaced the oil pump I still had no pressure. So its not a matter of i tried the most expensive thing First. Just figured if the truck stopped running it wasn't just a sensor. Now, my question is has anybody heard of this? Your saying it would start complaining real soon. well I wouldn't run it longer than a minute with no pressure. When i drained the Royal Purple from the pan it was sludge. could that have had something to do with it? I dont need jokes or smart coments i need my bronco casue it sucks drivning a honda when its perfect for topless driving.

the royal purple probably disloged some gunk that is now starving the pump motor. what does the oil look like now since the pump replacement. did you hook up a mechanical gauge yet?

When you replaced your oil pump, are you POSITIVE that you got the dizzy-driven hexagon drive shaft installed correctly into the top of the pump? Cuz if not, you got some more work cut out for you.........

First off, if the engine stopped running it wasn't because of low oil pressure. So you have one problem that is causing the truck to die occasionally. Second, if the oil pump really was the problem then adding more oil won't fix the oil pump. Third, I am not sure why you spent all that time and money replacing the oil pump if you did not bother to check what your oil pressure is with a mechanical gauge. It sounds to me like you are just randomly guessing at what the problem is and throwing parts at it. This is not the best way to fix any problem.

So let's start with the basics - Do you hear the lifters clattering when the engine is running? If not, then your oil pressure is fine for now.

Drain the sludge out of the engine and put in fresh oil. The sludge isn't helping anything.

What year/engine are you talking about? Miles? What's the history of the vehicle (as much as you know)?

If it's EFI, then pull the codes.
