Can anyone tell me exactly how this system works? Is it like the explorer Control Trac which starts out in 4 wheel drive and kicks out at 35mph? I tried one out and it didn't feel like it was in 4 wheel when taking off, but the salesman couldn't tell me exactly how it worked. Thanks, NorminN.B.

The biggest difference is that the Escape has no 4LOW setting- just 4AUTO and 4ON. In the auto setting, the power transfer unit (instead of a transfer case) on the transaxle uses a rotary blade coupling to distribute power where it's needed. 4ON locks the 2 axles together for true 4WD, but it's 4HIGH. It simplifies the system and makes it smoother and quieter in operation when we eliminate the 4LOW; besides, it's hard to imagine an Escape user needing 4LOW. We don't expect the typical Escape to be subjected to that kind of use. That's what your salesman SHOULD have told you!

Thanks 1956MarkII, so in 4 auto, it does not start off in 4 wheel drive like my 2000 explorer sport does? I think that is what you are saying. Thanks, NorminN.B.
