Question Escape Gas MPG.

I am thinking about buying an escape with v6 auto 4x4 (2001). Can anyone give me an idea as to what gas mpg I can expect around the city and highway. Also how does the 4x4 system work and how well do you like it? How rough is the ride? Thanks in advance. NorminN.B.

Escape Gas MPG.

We have it's cousin, the Mazda Tribute 4x4. We get 20 mpg city and 23 hwy. It rides smooth. My understanding of the 4x4 system is it is mostly front wheel drive unless slippage is detected. Then some power is sent to the rear. There is the option **** on the dash that locks the front/rear together 50/50.

Thumbs up Escape Gas MPG.

Thanks v10man. That sounds pretty good. Better than my 2000 explorer sport, 410 gears, rough riding and 15mpg. Does the escape start out in 4 wheel drive like the explorer control trac and kicks out around 38 mph? Thanks for the url. also. Looks like a good site. NorminN.B.

mywife had a bronco II and it got about 18 mpg. she bought an 02 escape and gets about 20 mpg. that's driving to work , trip 23 best.it only has 8000 mi on it so we expect it to get a little better as the engine breaks in.

Wow...
Another BroncoII transferree!

Our 2001 No Boundaries has about 6500 Miles, and is getting about 23 around town. (I think. I'll do the math when I get home, but off the top of my head, that seems about right.)

The Escape seems to be a good trade for the '88 BII we had.
Lost some turning radius, but in all We like it.
Good to get rid of the 2.9L What a lemon. That was my only complaint about the BII. Engine made on a Monday or something.

The Escape does at least equally well in inclement weather traction wise. I pulled a 2001 Dodge Neon around town on a dolly in the snow. No problem.

Escape Gas MPG.

Just a question.....

I always thought the Escape had a 60/40 ratio on its 4x4. 60 in the front, 40 in back??? At least that is what the salesman told us when my mom got her Escape.

My understanding...
default is 100% front until slippage is detected, then up to 40% is transfered to the rear as required. "Panic" switch on the dash locks the transfer case at 50/50.

NOTE:
I had it out yesterday in some really slippery conditions, and was pleasantly surprised at the Escape's ability to navigate conditions where other 4X4's were drifting off the road. Police cars were posted warning drivers of the ice, but some numbskulls don't listen. Traction was superb, Anti-lock brakes functioned perfectly, and I would have trusted my wife to navigate through that stretch of road. Your mom should happy with the truck!

Yeah, I agree with the last post, My wife has a 2002 XLT with everything but the leather, these little SUV's are awesome in the snow, they handle well, the anti locks are great, just an all around nice vehicle, 20-23 mpg.

Escape Gas MPG.

My only two complaints...
1.) Side bars aren't really practical for someone as big as me.
I cannot really use the step, so I step over it. With the winter conditions and all, they are always covered with road grime, and I get a "dirt kiss" on the back of my leg sometimes (usually going to church...).
2.) Placement of the flat-4 plug for the towing package is not really too convinient. I wouldn't have thought placing the plug more than a foot away from the hitch was what they would do, but they did.

Other than that, I really am satisfied with the Escape, and both of the problems I have found can be dealt with.
Anyone found decent looking mud flaps for an Escape? No hard plastic junk ones... Decent ones...to go with the Chrome Yellow paint.

Sorry, I lied, I forgot about the nerf bar option, which reminded me of the options that were available, my wife's escape doesn't have everything except leather, it doesn't have the nerf bars, or the side impact air bags. The nerf bars were not ordered for that very reason, your leg would hit it everytime you get in or out, and in snow country your pant leg gets wet or white with salt, and I agree with the flat plug, I have to lay on the ground half the time just to plug the trailer in. But we will buy another one after three years, if they don't change it to much to where it gets ugly.
