intake manifold gaskets leaking...

Hey guys,

I drove my 01 F250 home today and when I got home I noticed three drip spots on the driveway where my truck was the night before. I grabbed a light and got under the truck. I saw oil coming down the back of the engine around the bell housing. I got up ontop of the engine and looking and found that both intake manifolds are leaking. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue and did you or the dealer fix it?? It doenst look that complicated. It looks like the only hard part is removing the turbo. With my luck the bolts would snap or something.

I looked on alldata at an exploded view but they dont show a gasket for the manifold?

If your intake manifold is leaking then you're sucking air. If you're looking for an oil leak, look elsewhere. Where in the valley is the oil puddled, and are you 100% sure it's oil and not just soot stained diesel fuel?

The common oil leak issues up top are o-ring related. Up in front around the HPOP, in the middle around the HPO lines, or toward the rear under the turbo. The fuel leak issues are either at the bowl or where the fuel line goes into the head.

If you've got an oily slimy sludge on the intake manifolds, then tighten the hose clamps on the orange boots that connect to the manifold. If you're drip is really small, it could just be the loose boots allowing enough oil vapor to escape and condense back into a couple of drops.

After work today I will take some pictures and I also plan on pressure washing the engine and the underside of the truck so then I can see if anything is leaking and from where.

I will also check the clamps.

I did notice yesterday there was a very strong diesel smell when I popped the hood and it looks like a sensor has fuel on it and the top of the filter cap is moist. Im going to be changing the filter and check everything around it.

Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't use a pressure washer. Some simple green or your favorite degreaser and some low pressure water from a garden hose with a nozzle on it is all I'd use.

The common fuel leak issue is the drain valve Replacement O-rings for Ford Diesel Engines

He also has some upgraded options on the o-rings if you want to spend a couple of dollars more.

I wont be as delicate as Chris. DO NOT USE A PRESSURE WASHER ON THE TOP OF THE ENGINE. Underneath, is o.k. Your truck is fly by wire. everything on that engine relies on electrical signals. You get water down in a sensor plug and youll be chasing more than a fuel leak.

Thanks for all the info. I did use the pressure washer but it was more like a hose with some soap mixing with the water. I used a special tip that has such a wide angle there is no pressure behind it. I had the pressure washer sucking up some soap and I covered the engine and the underside then rinsed it down (I made sure I didnt use anything to powerful as a technician I know about water in plugs and all the great electrical problems you can have if you use alot of pressure)

Also the pictures will be up later today of the area that has what looks like oil all over it.

I will look into the oring kit. I did do a PM to the truck yesterday and when I took out the old fuel element it was nasty. The previous owner said he did regualer pms to the truck but by the looks of the element it pretty much looked original.

I did not have time yesterday to check the boots on the manifold if they were tight enough. I will be checking that soon.

I do have to say FTE is the best site for all your questions and everyone is very helpful.

Thanks again!

to answer your earlier question, the intake plenums are seales using a gray RTV from fomoco that is some heavyduty stuff. the intake manifold, which is the x shaped piece that connects to the front of the turbo, has an oring seal. if oil is leaking out of the plenums, thenyou may have bigger problems than a seal. most likely it is just ccv vapor that has pushed past a loose boot clamp and collected, or a fuel leak from a loose cap, or leaking drain valve orings.

I did see the gray RTV. Since I washed the engine I havent seen any oil coming from that area. Im going to check the boots to see if they are tight, hopefully its just a loose clamp like you said. Im going to be getting the oring kit, I can see a slight haze of fuel coming from some of the sensors.
