problem is as soon as the truck is started it smokes. and smokes, and smokes, until i shut it off. Truck has been sitting in garage for about 4 months now due to bodywork and paint. Noticed it while moving it in and out of garage.
i got a used motor off a guy, got a rebuilt head, all new parts on engine, you name it, its been replaced.
My question is that could the smoking be coming from bad gas from sitting soo long??
Also when i take the oil filler cap off it i can see smoke. blow by? truck doesnt seem to be burning oil and the level is correct.
there is no cat on it could that cause it to smoke more than usual?? any thing i can ck for or try? thanks guys
What color is the smoke? White, blue, black? It makes a bit of difference when diagnosing.
White means moisture or coolant is in the engine and you're seeing steam. Could be a blown head gasket. Check the antifreeze to see if any oil is in it.
Blue means it's burning oil. Check your spark plugs, replace them, use thicker oil, etc.
Black means it's running really rich. Could be that the carb needs to be rebuilt, adjusted, or the fuel pump's faulty, etc.
Bad gas will usually just make it run crummy, low power, and fill up the fuel filter. My Bronco was sitting for 4 years and it didn't smoke from the old gas that was in it.
As for smoke under the oil filler cap, have you replaced the PCV valve? They're only about $3 - $5, so worth a try there too.
its blueish smoke. i know that means oil but the level hasnt changed. and yes i got a new pcv. could the pcv vac source be wrong. i have it at the base of the carb??
yes and none of them have oil on them at all. i have a breather from advance auto in the valve cover towards the front. could that be causing a problem. i dont see how it would but im outta ideas here. For as much smoke thats coming out of that tailpipe the oil level should drop about half qt every day. but it holds up just fine. so what the hell is getting burnt up in there
I'm going out on a limb by saying anything, given my knowledge level, but it doesn't take much oil to make a ton of smoke. I'd run it a couple hundred miles, and see if the level falls off then.
Lots of smoke could be valve guides or rings but either of those usually show up on the plugs. A compression or leak down test should help to determine whats happening inside the engine. A vacuum gauge can help too.
I once had a SBC that lost the baffle on the the underside of the after market valve cover where the PCV valve plugged in and the engine smoked a lot.

smell the oil to make sure gas is not getting in there giveing you a false reading on the oil level. pull the vacume hose off the mod valve on the trans, to be sure not sucking atf up the line, and into the intake.
X2 with what dustybumpers said, regarding smell the oil. If gasoline is leaking internally (i.e. carburetor or fuel pump), the oil will be diluted, making it easier to get by rings, valve guides, etc. At the same time, the oil level will not drop as quickly as expected since it is being replaced with gasoline.
2X on rings. f/u as suggested w/ compression/leak down test. PVC (the baffle on the the underside of the after market valve cover where the PCV valve plugged in).
Let us know.
the fuel pump is external. its a aftermarket electric. and if the carb is leaking how could it leak into the crankcase mixing with the oil?? my thought is if it leaks it would leak right into the manifold and then eventually into the cylinders to be burned

no, because it will "wash" the cylinders, and all will not fire. pull the dip stick and smell it for gas. you need a pressure regulater to keep the pressure below 6 lbs. your float could be stuck open with a piece of dirt as well.
