I need to know if the front straight axle was offset to one side or the other from the factory? I am on the verge of purchasing a really nice 64 and it looks like the tire on the passenger side sticks out about an inch farther than the driver's side. I thought that the frame might be warped. It drives out fine. Viewing it from behind while going down the road the body does not seem to be cocked at all. Just curious. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Straight axle truck? If so, the axle's supposed to be centered in the frame.
Maybe a different offset wheel on one side?
That would be my guess too...
Before I'd get too worried about a possible axle shift, a quick check to the Old Crow's theory would be to pull off the front tires and switch them from RH to LH side then see if the 'offset' is still the same or not when rolling down the road.....
Thanks for the input guys. I will be sure to check that out. I do wish he had the original rims to go with the truck. I will try to get the pics of the truck upload today. Thanks
Tidefan88, WOW -- IS THAT BABY IS ONE CLEAN & GOOD-LOOKING TRUCK!!
I LOVE THE COLOR SCHEME and the RED stripe in the side molding really sets it off!!
Interesting,,,,,I don't see too many still running a generator....
Regarding the wheels/tires, I'll agree with you, it doesn't look bad, but I'd prefer it with some OEM-style wheels & tires too. It would still look WAY SWEET and it would throw less stones, dirt, etc. against that nice paint!
I don't "have a problem" with the non-original tailgate and rear bumper. They did a nice job blending them into the look of the truck.....
From those pictures, it looks to me that the LH (driver's side) tire is sticking out of the wheelwell a bit more than the RH side tire....... but you said the opposite, "...it looks like the tire on the passenger side sticks out about an inch farther than the driver's side. I thought that the frame might be warped." ...Hmmm....... Maybe that 'condition' can be a bargaining chip when determining a selling price...?? <hint, hint="">

After looking at the pics, it's not the wheels that are causing this, one of the front springs leafs has broken, causing the axle to shift over to one side.
This causes "dog tracking" and the EZ way to check it out is. Have someone else drive it while you follow behind. You will then be able to see FOUR tires, instead of just two.
Thanks ND. I will be sure to check that out. I work with the guy that has this truck and he is a really honest fella. I don't think he knows everything about the truck. He has only had it about 3 years. I am going to be working out the details of the purchase in the coming days. I couldn't pass this up.
Yup, well now I know. If I ever get around to painting my truck, I know what color(s) it's gonna be. Nice looking ride.
If the spring isn't broken, I think maybe worn spring bushings(or maybe the upper shackle bushing)could also cause the axle to shift to one side.
Strange thought - check to see if all 4 wheels are the same size/have the same offset. If, say the 2 rear tires are 15x8 & the fronts 15x7, and somebody screwed up when they put the tires back on.... And if you don't like that gate, give it to me - I'll take it! LOL
I appreciate all the helpful post. I will be checking those things out as soon as the owner gets back from vacation. I hope it is one of the things mentioned. I am going to buy it regardless. I will keep you in mind Rusty when time comes to get rid of the tailgate
