Thought I'd Brag
I love the look one people faces after they say, "You must get like 5mpg in that huge truck"...then you tell them no 15, 17, 20 etc... Mostly dis-belief is what I see...
I drove a 2000 Expedition with a 5.4L for 4-5 years, hate to think of all the money I wasted driving that thing getting 12-14mpg, and pulling my trailer getting less, had I known I could get over 15mpg with a 7.3 powerstroke I would have owned one a long time ago!
But it is still safe with the airbags but not made of the same steel.
It took some convincing for me to put her in that thing.
I understand i'm fudging some numbers, but to offset them, I'm adjusting the other numbers.
Worse comes to worse, I'll look up on the recipt how far the distance was and still divide it by 18 gallons.
I think 22 is being generous.
I am still in disbelief on the numbers themselves, but even if its less mileage, it will take a bit to get it less than 20. At 22MPG, subtracting 40 miles just makes it 20mpg, which is still effing amazing for a 4wd PSD.
usually only the 2wd guys get over 20.
I'm using the old grey CPS just for reference.
I did have a 140 hp 85 mph burst in there as well, up hill. After a lady tried to run me into the ditch.
Started moving over into my lane before she was even half way passed me.
I turned the tuner up and smoked her out when I went buy and put some distance between us. Never saw her again. That made me hot.
I was running my 60 hp economy tune the whole trip.
I've never seen much difference between the tunes as far as mileage goes, and Jim reports the same thing. Just get surging with the 140 tune on cruise, so I just run the 60 HP tune which does just fine. Sometimes I'll run the 30hp tow as well. I see a big difference in my fuel economy between 60-70 mph. I drive to the same places a lot, and pay attention to my fuel usage, so I got an idea where the sweet spot is. But never expected that.
Must have just got some good fuel that day. Found it for 2.85 and I pumped in 50 dollars worth with some diesel additive cause they didn't have 2cycle oil there for sale.
The white bottle thats not diesel kleen, its the other stuff.
Lubricity is important!

My pa's 02 5.4 gets 18 most of the time. But when he loads on his 12 foot enclosed trailer, it goes to ****.
Nevertheless I would guess you are still getting good numbers. Especially the way you drive. Consistency is key with mph.
Congrats nonetheless.
And your right, You can get in trouble fudging numbers.
MPG is more of an estimate than anything hard fact.
Its pretty impossible to get the numbers unless you filled up a fuel cell and stuck it on a stationary track and ran it at X speed till the cell emptied.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I got 17.5 once in my truck the rest of the time its around 14. Something about my throttle pedal must be broken. It either idles or is hammer down. I just can't get it to settle at partial throttle. No codes or nothing. Could you guys help me figure it out?
Good one Tim. I was going to jump in on this a while ago but just been watchin. The only time I ever check the mileage I am pulling a trailer. And the only reason would be filling up travelling to and from racing I know how many miles I traveled so its right there. I never drive enough without a trailer behind to really check it, or the few times I do I never remember.
I just know it does decent.
The last semi-long trip I took (200 miles round trip), I did get 20MPG at 65MPH. Wind was pretty calm that day.
The guy I bought the truck from did claim he got 22MPG on one long trip. I'm guessing it was a long flat 55MPH trip.
I'm surprised I'm able to get what I do. It's 4WD with a visor on the cab and 285/75 tires. I'm sure the hard tonneau cover helps out a bit.
