I got 22mpg once... 4.10 gears, dually rear with one one wheel on each side, no bed, all highway

chitty weather, couldn't get traction from any stop, one tire fire in full effect. haha

Now I get about 17mpg mixed city/highway not driving over 60mph with 3.55 gears and 285 tires

James. I drove from VB to Johnson city tenn.
thats 480 something miles.

I figured my usage before I filled up to be 4 gallons based on my average fuel economy and distance traveled to get 22 gallons of fuel used.

With all due respect sounds like a S.W.A.G at best. Mileage divided by pump from meter full to full is the only MPG worth discussing. I don't mean to be an #ss but for 18 yrs dealing with people telling me what kind of milage they get in the trucking indusrty, unless they have hard mileage and meter numbers it's just guessing...

Darn, thats even better. Question for you though, did you run the tank from full to absolutely dry in that 420 miles? Thats the only way you would have been able to use all 18 gallons right? Isn't that the size of your tank?

Read up on running our tanks dry in the diesels.
Not a good idea. Okay on the gassers, bad idea on a diesel.

I know where my fuel gauge ends.
And in all honesty, I could have probably gone another 30 miles with the fuel left in the tank.
I constantly forget to get fuel on the way home and have slowly been getting to close to the point of no return.

When it got down really low to that point you shoudnl't be using the tank, I switched to the rear tank.

but still.
not using all the fuel just inflates the numbers even further.
I didn't switch tanks till about 10 miles before neals house.
I know my Fuel mileage sucked coming out of VB too, I was on the throttle and lots of stop in go in town.

People keep arguing specifics when I didn't inflate anything, but really tried to be conservative on my numbers doesn't help the argument any.

Just like the above post.
Need a full tank to see how far you go.

I went this many miles and we'll just say I used more fuel than I did, but the numbers still came up more than the other estimate.

I wish I could get the recipt from the truck, but I put in 70 dollars, so I didn't check how many I put in the front tank. but seeing as its an 18 gallon tank, and I used less. That just hurts the argument point from other people.

I think people forget how numbers work sometimes.
I know I do, but I can use a calculator.

I'm pretty happy with it.
Usually its the 2wd guys getting 20+'s
Travis gets over 20 every now and then.

I doubt I'll get it again, just got some good fuel that day I guess.

For you to get an accurate number you need to start with an absolutely FULL tank! You can run it empty but I don't think James meant absolutely empty, really? Use your head!
Anyway start with a full tank and drive it however many miles half tank empty tank whatever. Then record how many miles you went and fill it up to completely full. Then do you calculation. This is not a new concept it has been used for many years. Give it a shot it will give you the most accurate number you can get on the road.

Thats what i was trying to say Neal, It just from the sounds of it was that he drove 480 miles and divided by the size of the tank. Which is fine if you want a ballpark. but you need to fill it back up and use that number. Not switch tanks close to the end, then guess by the tank size and an old average. If i did that I would probably get better mileage too.

Talyn, sounds like you have a great trip according to your fuel mileage!

I jump in my '97 today, and immediately notice it is near empty.........the 18 year old has been driving it....darn it. Well I flip the switch and the other tank is FULL! What I nice feeling!

I dont know how you guys are having issues with what i'm saying.

If i drive 480 miles and divide it by the tank size and not actual usage, meaning i used less than the tank size, I'm actually handicapping my numbers.

I don't see why anyone would fuss over that.

say I just used 17 gallons.
that makes the numbers even crazier if you divide that in to 420 miles.

Just sayin.
