Fires once, but wont start...pass code chk

I have an '05 and the other morning I turned the key, let the glow plugs heat up and when I tried to start it, it would fire once, but not start. If I kept cranking it would never fire again. However if I turn the key off and start over again it will do the same thing.

I changed both fuel filters and cleaned the EGR valve. When I hook the code checker up it passes.

Any ideas or questions, your help would be greatly appreciated...

check out the "no-start" troubleshooting thread in the tech folder. These things can be hard to diagnose - it takes some detective work.

Thanks, that's where I've been looking...and am still looking. I think you're right about the detective work!

Did you happen to just change a fuel filter or anything like that?

I changed both fuel filters after it wouldn't start, but did nothing before.

my truck was doing the same exact thing. My problem ended up being a bad FICM. My FICM was only testing at around 28 volts at engine idle.

I was just reading about the FICM. How much was the new FICM?

Well, I started by replacing both fuel filters and cleaning the EGR. I was contemplating checking the FICM or disconnecting the ICP sensor. I'm looking at 9, 11, 13, and 16 right now, but being somewhat mechanically challenged I'm trying to hedge my bets and hoping someone here has had the same issue and I can determine if I should attempt to repair this myself. I've been successful with help from the forum in the past and I'm hoping things end up the same this time.

2005's do not have the issues with the ICP that the earlier year models have had. However, they do fail on occasion. It is an easy thing to disconnect the ICP on your truck and see if it makes a difference. The FICM voltage is a high priority to check. Hopefully it is not a high pressure oil leak (usually the STC fitting on a 2005).

For me, making sure that the batteries are strong and healthy is essential in almost ALL troubleshooting activites. Then checking fuel flow and oil flow.

Okay, thanks! I'll check the FICM voltage first thing in the morning. BTW, after reading about the temperature issue in the FICM thread, I went ahead and plugged the core heater in to see if that makes a difference in the morning. I'll do a search for the STC fitting and start reading up on that as well.

I think it's great you are willing to learn this and try it yourself. That is how someday you will teach otheres what you have learned. KUDOS

Thanks for the encouragement! Do you remember how much that FICM was when you replaced it?

Very frequently they can be repaired. Swamps diesel can repair them. A remanufactured FICM can cost as much as $800.

I bought from swamps. They charge $600 and give you back $300 when you send your core in. It is my understanding that once swamps fixes/mods the FICM, it should be able to withstand the extra current draw generated by the inductive heating flash.

On a side note, when my FICM first started failing, the truck would still start great if left plugged in. However, afer a couple weeks it would not start at all. I hope this helps.
