Sounds like you picked the wrong tool for the job, that's all.
I have a Z28 for when I want to burn rubber and go fast. Then again, the 99 SD with the V10 does a pretty good job at that, too.
I've been driving a 96 F150 with the 300 in it for about a month now. It will eventually go to Daughter as her first truck. It at least gets out of its own way. I'm not displeased, understanding its limitations.
To me its like a cb radio you can have a lot of money and time put into it and then key it down and modulate and not do a whole lot better than a stock radio b/c of wheather or whatever but you still appreciate and enjoy it for what it is.
I got all worked up because the CHICK got a car length on me on the onramp. I love my engine and my truck. I wouldn't change it for anything. It hauls a half ton of concrete with three guys in it just like my 390, plus it gets great mileage too. What could be better. Next time on the onramp, I'll just bump her off the ramp! Who says driving isn't a contact sport?
Food for thought: "Regarding the 300: the designers knew full well that the best truck engine is a tractor engine, and the design parameters of the venerable 300 closely match the offerings of such tractor notables as Oliver and International Harvester."
there ya go kevin.... or if you want to stay with a ford, come to md and borrow my 80 mustang coupe with the 460 in it.
...sort of reminds me of that Beach Boys song..."but I get rubber in all four gear...and if she had wings I know she could fly. She's my little blue scoop, you don't know what I got."

5 spd, and red. awsome ride, tell the camery to "bring it on" btw, the hood closes with only a stock scoup for a turbo car.
Usually I just putt along, but driving a truck, people pass you on the freeway like I have the plague and my door just fell off!! Sometimes it gets to me so I just trap 'em between me and another car, just to pay my repects, so to speak.
I know exactly what you mean, was a great day when I took the 82 to work after it's improved 300, same idiots, tried same crap, when the 4bbl went Barooom, they were shocked.
Hi guys. Just couldn't resist reporting my rearend gear swap, from 3.73 to 3.31. Overjoyed! The little 223 with Ford o Matic runs the freeways just fine NOW. 65 mph at about 2,500 rpm. I did'nt think the 223 could pull that much gear, i was sure wrong.

I ran out of gas on the interstate coming home from a Beach Boys concert. I had enough gas to get home, but with the revv-a-thon going on in the parking lot leaving the concert, I did not!
Anybody that's been to one knows what I'm talking about too!
-I love being this guy, under age 30. Of course this did not happen with my MAF-I-6. rather, my 302, 4v-carbureted with a healthy appetite for 93-octane!

I did that exact same swap about five years back. I was very pleased too. Where I noticed it most was towing a trailer over the passes into Oregon. But you know, it still did fine, and 99% of my driving is just cruising anyway, so I am very happy with it.
One of these days I'll get around to installing my Gear Vendor over/under drive, which will turn my three speed C6 into a six speed, and should get me near to 20 mpg. That will be happy day. It would also be nice to install a Lokar floor shifter so I would just drop it down a gear at will, without having to punch it for the kickdown.

I'd love to have that set up in my E250. But, having your cake and eating it to would be a little expensive.
