I have a well maintained 2002 LB 4x4 crewcab 7.3 (all done at dealership). My truck has 92k miles on it and was getting ready to do a Glamis Dunes trip so I thought it was a good time to take it in for servicing. Oil, coolant and tranny flush and also the severe duty air filter setup. Seven days later I said I'm coming for my truck so button it up, I picked it up late in the day and noticed the idle was faster and the tranny was jumping around, so I called the dealer and he said bring it back in the morning. That night I looked under the hood and noticed my coolant was brown not green. The next day it would not go into drive, I had it towed to the dealer. He said flushing the tranny can loosen up stuff between the plates and now I have a wrecked tranny, I also have diesel in my coolant from a cracked injector cup. It is costing me about 5-6k to fix, I thought I had a good truck! Is there a heavier duty trans or upgrade. Help please
Hind-sight is 20/20, but normally, "well maintained" and "by a dealership" don't belong in the same sentence. You live near John Wood, so I'd get a trans from him if yours is toast. You *can* do the injector cups yourself, but it's one of the more PITA things to do. Pretty much all of us here do our own mods, maintenance, and repairs, and don't like dealerships for this very reason... Hope you get 'er back together soon!!
He said flushing the tranny can loosen up stuff between the plates and now I have a wrecked tranny,
He's telling you an old wive's tale. It is NOT true. If the flush is done correctly it cannot do ANY harm. He is just telling you this because he isn't smart enough to know any better.
The only things between the plates is air and ATF.
John builds one of the toughest, stoutest, best 4R100 tranmissions in the US. There was a nice write up on John Wood in the recent issue of Diesel Power magazine.
He's built transmissions for race teams who putter around on the Glamis dunes, the farmers in his area who abuse their transmissions to the point it should be illegal, as well as guys who drag race or just use their trucks as daily drivers.
John Wood Automotive. 760-356-9421. Calling in the morning is probably your best shot at reaching him (one man shop), otherwise leave your name an number, tell him what's up, and he'll get back to you.
If it's done incorrectly you leave the shop with an overfilled or underfilled trans. Or they use some type of chemical cleaner that really screws up the transmission.
Thanks guys, I sent an email into John Wood and though he is about 150 miles away I think I'm going to have him rebuild my trans. On his website he states he "builds" the tranny unique to the conditions needed and even though the dealership says they will install a rebuilt one with 100k or 3yr waranty I am not comfortable with their craftsmenship. John Wood sounds like a true craftsmen who cares about his rep. It's a little more expensive but so are the finer things in life. Where is the value in missing 2 family vacations due to incompetence, can't buy those lost memories and the kids were devastated. If anyone knows a trusted PSD tech in the San Bernardino, CA area please let me know, the days of going to the dealer are over. I don't feel like going to jail. Thanks again guys.
