Now that I've found a site with knowledge people I will ask this question. The tow Haul mode button dosen't seem to work right dealer said it was normal. How is it supposed to work? Also when my transmission downshifts down to third and I pull the shift lever into third the truck shifts into second the rpm's hit over 4K. Is there any way to hold third gear without it doing the downshift again? Thanks

ok this sounds like a Gas F250, 5.4L, right? what year?
D (Overdrive) with Tow/Haul ON
The Tow/Haul feature improves transmission operation when towing a
trailer or a heavy load. All transmission gear ranges are available when
using Tow/Haul.
To activate Tow/Haul, press the
button on the end of the gearshift
lever.
The TOW HAUL indicator light will
illuminate in the instrument cluster.
Tow/Haul delays upshifts to reduce frequency of transmission shifting.
Tow/Haul also provides engine braking in all forward gears when the
transmission is in the D (Overdrive) position; this engine braking will
slow the vehicle and assist the driver in controlling the vehicle when
descending a grade. Depending on driving conditions and load
conditions, the transmission may downshift, slow the vehicle and control
the vehicle speed when descending a hill, without the accelerator pedal
being pressed. The amount of downshift braking provided will vary based
upon the amount the brake pedal is depressed.
To deactivate the Tow/Haul feature and return to normal driving mode,
press the button on the end of the gearshift lever. The TOW HAUL light
will no longer be illuminated.
When you shut-off and restart the engine, the transmission will
automatically return to normal D (Overdrive) mode (Tow/Haul OFF).

Hey there heavy duty f250 I see your from Fl. have you joined the Fl Chapter yet? If not please do, we could use some new blood down here! I used to spend some time there in Hudson, was staying in Weeki Watchee, now I live in Ft. Pierce. Shifting to 2nd when manually shifting to 3rd does not sound normal to me, but I'm no expert on these transmissions. Does this only happen while in tow haul mode?

If third gear is selected, the transmission should stay in third. Why do you think it isn't?
Also, why do you think T/H mode is not working properly?
I had an 06 with the 5.4 in it. When you depress the brake you should feel it downshift in tow/haul mode, but the 5.4 does not provide an extreme amount of braking.
Does your rpm guage increase as you slow down? That is the best way to tell.
I dont wanna hijack...but i have the same truck and i was wondering how i could tell if i had the tow package in it? I know its a stupid question but i never tow anything. Its my first Ford truck.
The tow haul mode seams to work when it wants to. When you are traveling down the highway and drop it into third gear to hold the trans the truck will downshift again and the RPM's will push over 4K. If anyone from Florida is in Hudson look me up. DIsabled vet no job.

why are u manually shifting down?
in T/H, if you want the tranny to downshift, you press on the brake instead of the gas.
A little pressure causes a little downshift, a lot of pressure: more than 1 at the appropriate time.. (hard stop, down to 3rd, then 2nd, etc)... Or so it does on my F350..
I never touch the shift lever.
Once you shift out of (over)drive u disable T/H mode.
Remember, its a 5 speed, so RPM and speed dependant, it was probably in 4th, when you manually shifted to 3rd. If you put it in 1, 2 or 3, thats what it will stay in. It will not shift down without available RPM room so it wont over rev. Depending on speed, hitting the brake may not shift down, depending on the room to down shift RPM, depending on the hold back required. With a load, trailer, it ussualy will and you will feel much more hold back. I have occasions where I am just not a correct speed to downship and then I do it manually but this is ussualy inloaded. Also, its detuned a bit in winter or you will have a sliding truck on ice. Thats my experience with an 05 diesel, its a great transmission.
Actually, it's a 6 speed, but all six are NOT available either in T/H nor regular Drive. That's why it FEELS like you drop a gear went going from T/H (brake) then physically putting it in 3rd. As the others say, either use the gearshift OR the T/H with the brake. Don't try to second guess the TorqueShift.
