There are two ways. If the filter is plugged completely the coolant bypasses the filter element and the filter does not get nearly as warm as the hoses. I check to see if the filter is hot but also pull my overflow hose off at the degas bottle and look at the flow. Plugged cooler=no flow. Over the last 4000 miles the coolant is a transparent, beautiful gold color. Myockpowerstroke, I believe it was him posted some pics of a McMaster Carr inline sight glass that was sweet. I may go that route.

I don't think mine has a bypass feature - it certainly isn't necessary.

Atta boy rickatic, thats using the 5" between your ears, you get the beer AND you get the filter installed.
I changed by first coolant filter after 5000 Km, not much in it when I tore it down, second filter, still on after about 15000 miles, still flows nicely and gets hot, so I will save my 3rd filter for a while longer.
