I asked this in the General Diesel section but thought I'd post it here as well as this gets waaaayy more hits.
I was talking to an International diesel tech a couple of years ago and he mentioned to me that the turbo's on the T444E International school buses were larger than what Ford put on the 7.3.
My question is, can anyone confirm this and is it possible to swap the turbo from the T444E onto our 7.3's?
I am a fairly new "newbie" here on FTE, but I have an 01 Excursion 7.3 which we mostly use for towing our 30' travel trailer. What does a different turbo actually do for our motors (van turbo or the one mentioned here used on busses)? Is it worth the money? If you upgrade the turbo do you have to upgrade other parts as well? Are these reconditioned ones OK to buy?
A van turbo has a different, slightly larger exhaust wheel, and a much larger exhaust housing. What it does is favor the top-end of your RPM range greatly. It will reduce your EGTs at WOT by about 200 degrees, and helps reduce surge. However, it will be a lot more laggy spooling up than the stocker, ESPECIALLY on stock tuning. In fact, I wouldn't even consider running the van turbo on stock tunes, so if you decide to go with a van turbo, it will require some other mods to support it (intake, exhaust, gauges, & tunes as a minimum).
