If this has been posted I'll be derned if I can find it. The 90 F-250 Ranch truck with an E4OD is not shifting right & the tach bounces while you crank it over, then once it catches, it dies. I tried replacing the tach sensor, but $89 later, no luck. I also went through all the fuses. Am I missing something??? Any help would be great.
Other than the indication of engine RPM they are not connected with starting. You have another problem, most likely fuel related.
For example: if controller does the GPs for 10 seconds.....you crank it for 15 seconds and it starts then just quits.....fuel would be my guess. What is the fuel level in the tank selected......above or below 1/4.
However if there is no power to all the three connectors on the IP key on (cold engine) you have an electrical problem so check fuses. How long does the GPs wait to start light stay on....... key on (not in start position).
Sorry. I should rephrase myself. The tach dies, not the truck. It does have glowplug problems, but it starts, even with a tank of bad fuel in it..... Still sound electrical & where most likely?
Good luck on finding your tach problem. I've been looking for my tach problem ever since I bought my truck back about 05 or 06. I've got a wiring diagram and even that doesn't help. Last winter the tach started after I changed the thermostat and worked for about 5 minuets than stopped again. I've taken the dash apart and didn't find anything wrong. Short of stripping the wiring, I'm at a loss If you find the problem, please post it here and I"ll check that out.
i had the same issue. i replaced the tach sensor.--- nothing
i replaced the fuse-----nothing
i replaced the relay on the driverside under the hood---nothing
i even pulled the cluster -----nothing
i changed the gizmo on the trans----nothing
then i started backyard fixing, at the connection where the relay plugs in i jumped it with a 2 in wire -----shifs fine- tack works- that wire doesn't get hot that wire will be in there till i get rid of this truck, and that aint happening any time soon
