I have a 85 diesel f-250 and i just bought a cluster with a tach, installed it and the tach doesn't respond. The original cluster is tach-less. I must be missing the sending unit or something.
First thing to check ..... is there a place for a large 1" bolt on the timing gear cover where the IP attaches. It is on the drivers side top of the cover..next to the oil filler hole..... that would be where the sensor is installed when used. Older engines had the forward/up oil filler centered on the cover face. If you do not have the new one then replacement of the cover is required first..... then the sensor and wiring.
Hopefully a member with the wiring/installation info will post........
If you have the connector, all the wiring is already in the harness.
You do need to swap the entire cluster, the non tach clusters do not have the tack circuit on the printed circuit behind the cluster.
Also do you have a plug in the IP drive gear cover where the tach sensor goes?
The tach sensor is available at Ford, I think the last one I bought was 47 dollars.
