So I have my '85 6.9/C6, and a Banks turbo system that was just rebuilt last year, yet it just isn't enough. I was wondering if anyone could give some pointers on where to go now? Eventually I would like to go for bigger boost numbers, but good to start small and work up. Any suggestions?
1.how is the rig used? hauling/towing/or just a DD?
2.how many miles are on the IP and injectors?
3.what ratio do you have in rear axle? 3.55 or 4.10? and with what tire size?
4.what other mods have you preformed besides the turbo? example; intake mod/larger exhaust etc.
5.generally,when you say it isn't enough power, how so? under what circumstances/conditions? or always?
6.when was the engines timing last checked?
7.how many lbs of boost do you have?
8.have you recently checked the compression?
9.how many miles are on the engine?
10.don't you wish id stop asking so many damn questions? lol
It's more of an "occasional driver," but I believe everything is stock, and unfortunately my odometer reads ?30,000. It has a 3.55 rear end, and is currently straight piped 3" until I get a new muffler. I generally would like a bit more torque to play with. Before my boost line got cut, my gauge was reading 8 psi stomped, 12 up a hill. I have been told a tranny swap would be the best idea for a start.
occasional driver, and looking for more low end grunt.
the above statement SCREAMS gear swap.
so swap to 4:10's.this is fast, easy, and economical to do.
the easiest way,is to hit the local salvage yard for a complete rear axle.grab some new U-bolts and swap her out in a day.
also sounds like your unsure of the mileage of IP and injectors.thats the big one right there.to many people mistake the IDI for being a dog,due to worn out IP/injectors.
do a search, those who had high miles and never changed them, wish they did it sooner.
it sets a back a chunk of change all at once is the problem.saves loads on fuel pretty quick with diesel over 3$ a gallon now though.
my low mileage truck even N/A gives me a sweet push in the seat if i come onto it.
iv got my stake body off right now working on putting down planks, and man is it fun like this lol. (so much for better fuel mileage due to less wind resistance....i can't help myself. )
I would run straight 4" pipe. Yours is turboed so it would be half as loud as mine that has four inch soon to be linked to a 5" stack. Ditch the muffler you won't be sad!! Walker exhaust pipe is cheap from the shops here in Canada right now. 34.99 for 10feet of straight 4" pipe. Highly recommend the exhaust upgrade. 3" is for gassers!!!! Lol
Starting to sound good for the gear swap, any idea on the cost of new injectors and IP? And should I swap to at least a four-speed? My dad used to have an old 7.3 N/A, and he said running on seven cylinders with the manual it put you back. Also a question about the exhaust, should I run 4" off the turbo(seeing as it seems a bit large), or off the downpipe? By the way right now with it chopped underneath the cab sounds beautiful . Just not so fond of the town cop maybe looking for an easy ticket
id keep the C6.
the price to swap for an occasional driven truck wouldn't make sense.besides that, the C6 is great trans anyway.just no OD,but you don't care much since its not a DD anyway.
toss a shift kit in it for some firm shifts.you'll love it.
use all the $ that swap would cost for something else imho.
if your going to want to drive it on the highway and get decent mileage if you swap 4:10's your going to want a zf5 or a built e4od for a tranny so you can get some extra gears to keep the R's down on the open road
you'll have to call your local store to try and get prices on the injectors but i would definantly stick with motorcraft in all cases that are possible
and remember diesels ain't realy made for fast, you wont outrun that 460 gasser down the block, that is till you figure out how much more time he spends at the feul pump
