My '55 truck build has been put on hold due to some unfortunate housing expenses like repairs to two foundation walls, termites (just showed up so no damage), a broken kitchen drain pipe (have to repair from the outside or demo the kitchen), and four replacement windows.
However I have a chance to pick up a 2001 Explorer rear end, supposedly with under 30K miles, for $100. Explorer was hit in front and is being parted.
Good choice/bad choice? Problems with putting this 2001 under my '55?
Anything else I need to look for? I might pick up the 4 tires/rims if priced right.
I have one under my 55 its from a 94; you will probably have disc brakes on the 2001 the width should be the same; I would also get the drive shaft. I would say get it if you have the extra funds they are a lot more a pull-a-part yards.
I'm sure the explorer had some sort of ABS in 01 but it shouldn't concern you ont he rear axle. ABS is controlled by a brake module that is plumbed just short of the master cylinder. Wouldn't be an issue on a axle swap like you're talking
I have a '96 in my 55 and they should be the same. The width is just about the same and the disk breaks are a plus. Around the Houston area they go for $300 for a good low mileage dif. You will want to be sure to pick up the drive shaft as well as the parking break cables and all the brackets if you can.
