If you have concerns, place an earth magnet on the outside bottom of the carrier. Any metal debris going by it will be stuck there and you will see what's actually hapening in a few thousand miles. It also keeps the leftover crap from circulating in the new oil.

Great idea.

Probably a dumb question but I'm used to asking those...
Whats an "earth" magnet?

"Rare Earth" magnet is the terminology. They are some of the strongest magnets you can get. They are made from alloys of "rare earth" elements (like neodymium, samariu-cobalt, etc).

Have we gone far enough off the subject yet. LOLOL HEHEHE

Kind of interetsing story .................

I used to work at a manufacturing site for Pharmaceuticals. We handled large volumes of Hydrofluoric acid, Phenol, Carbon Monoxide at VERY high pressures .............. and the most common accident was hands getting seriously pinched by the rare earth magnets (used to keep metal out of the final product). They were amazing (but they were big also). From what I observed, they did not lose their strength in the 4 years I was involved with them.

69cj's recommendation was a good one IMO. Good luck to you (and sorry about the hijack .........)

You can buy them approximately 3/8 inch dia. cheap at Harbor Freight. You almost need a pair of pliers to pull one off.

There are no "dumb" questions. Only questions that are simpler to answer than others.

I dropped my 04 f250 with LS off at a local mechanic and he added Valvoline 75/90 synthetic that states,"SynPower Gear Oil is specially recommended for limited-slip hypoid differentials" and "Reduces Chattering: Contains special additives to reduce chattering in limited-slip differentials" and "Valvoline SynPower Gear Oil is recommended for use in axle applications requiring factory-fill or drain-and-fill levels of limited slip performance." I talked to the mechanic once i saw the bill and the gear oil he used and he told me not to worry. He also didnt change the front cause he said it looked new, and only changed the rear. So I feel like he isn't out to screw me and take my money. Any thoughts?

It will probably be okay as long as you don't do much racing or towing. If you tow at all though, I would get the proper weight fluid in there.

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer:

Rare earth magnets have higher remanence, much higher coercivity and energy product, but (for neodymium) lower Curie temperature than other types. The table below compares the magnetic performance of the two types of rare earth magnet, neodymium (Nd2Fe14B) and samarium-cobalt (SmCo5), with other types of permanent magnets. <table class="wikitable" border="1"><tbody><tr> <th>Magnet</th> <th>Br (T)</th> <th>Hci (kA/m)</th> <th>(BH)max (kJ/m3)</th> <th>Tc (°C)</th> </tr> <tr> <td>Nd2Fe14B (sintered)</td> <td>1.0–1.4</td> <td>750–2000</td> <td>200–440</td> <td>310–400</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Nd2Fe14B (bonded)</td> <td>0.6–0.7</td> <td>600–1200</td> <td>60–100</td> <td>310–400</td> </tr> <tr> <td>SmCo5 (sintered)</td> <td>0.8–1.1</td> <td>600–2000</td> <td>120–200</td> <td>720</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Sm(Co,Fe,Cu,Zr)7 (sintered)</td> <td>0.9–1.15</td> <td>450–1300</td> <td>150–240</td> <td>800</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Alnico (sintered)</td> <td>0.6–1.4</td> <td>275</td> <td>10–88</td> <td>700–860</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Sr-ferrite (sintered)</td> <td>0.2–0.4</td> <td>100–300</td> <td>10–40</td> <td>450</td></tr></tbody></table>
Rare-earth magnet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rare earth magnets like Nd2Fe14B start to fade out at 300C, but the cheap kinds you get at Harbor Freight probably fade out a lot sooner.

So it is not that it "wears" as much as heat damages them.

Attached to an oil sump, that is not a big problem (your oil will boil before the magnets die), but in electric motors, temperature is a major issue.

That is why electric vehicles have a lot more hurdles than most advocates let on.

Except a lot of the hybrid electric traction motors are induction and not permanent magnet.
