Did I mess up?

I read my owners manual AFTER replacing my rear diff fluid with 80-90 synthetic.

Should I drain it again and install the correct 80-140 synthetic??

In short...yes. Don't forget your friction modifier if you have a LSD.

Yea you should there is a big difference between 80-90 and 80-140. Sorry you had to spend the money twice.

As stated above, don't forget the friction modifier if it is L.S.

I installed the correct fluid and modifier.

But, there was some silver tint in the old fluid.
The bottom of the housing had some fluid laying
in there that I looked close at and it looked like
some wear had occured.

Could the wrong fluid have caused this? I ran the
truck maybe 500 miles with the 90 wt.

The gears looked fine. But the color of the old/wrong
fluid worried me.

Thanks again

Gary

If you were doing normal every day driving (not towing heavy), you should be fine.

A slight "silver" colouration is normal "wear and tear" with some mileage on your truck !

If you've never had the diff thoroughly cleaned out (as in entire diff, axle, and bearing replacement, there is and will always be a little metal particles in the fluid. That stuff is so hard to get rid of, and therefore should not be rid of as it is normal and does not have any adverse effects on the rear differential or its bearings.

You can capture, filter with a screen, and use the 80w-90 in your front axle.

Does the front axle take friction modifier or does it even matter there?

Front axle doesn't take friction modifier since there is no LS, but it won't hurt to have it in if you already added it to the 80w-90. The rear axle may or may not need modifier depending on what fluid you use and the condition of your clutches. Start with none, add 1/2 bottle at a time if you notice it grabbing in corners. Each time you add, give it 10-20 miles to work in or go drive figure eights in a big parking lot.

Thanks for the responses.

I'll probably drive it 500-1000 miles and pull the
diff cover again to see if the fluid is cleaner. I am
probably being overly cautious but its easy to do and
then...hopefully...I won't have to worry about again for a while.
