Hey yall I just uploaded these pictures from a MVA (car accident) on the NYS thruway a week or so ago. Just happened to take my phone along with me this time, let me tell you i was glad I did. The guy and his wife(both who are in perfect shape, cept for soiled pants n a few scratches) were driving east hauling a good size camper when a turkey flew out from a field and went thru the passengers side windshield, narrowly missing the wife(how i have no idea). The impact sent the bird thru the windshield and into the back seat and also knocking out the back window. Nobody was hurt thank god, cept the bird. So anyone else got any good stories or pictures of things they've hit or have hit them?? I know yall have some good ones so share away!
I kid my boys that their uncle has a door covered with animal silhouettes, like a fighter pilot, since he has hit so many animals. I was even in the truck once when he crossed several lanes of desert highway to run over a squirrel.
Best kill was accidental. We were driving late at night on a mountain road. We came around a curve and saw a coyote. We swerved the truck to avoid where we thought the coyote would run to. But he ran right infront of us and we heard thumping and yelping, end of coyote.
My personal highest score was running over thousands of white mice on highway 14 between Mojave and Walker Pass in Calif at 3 in the morning. Miles and miles of mice, you could NOT avoid them. Pop pop squish pop, for a couple hours. Amazing. My kid brother was there. I wonder if that is when he got his fetish for running over small furry animals.
Jim, you reminded me of the time I drove from the high desert around Bishop, sown through the valley (It's been many years, forgive my lack of geography knowledge) to El Centro, CA. There was one stretch of road where I must have hit 60 or 70 rabbits in the same manner. At first it was kind of funny, and I was joking about it- no way to avoid the things. After a while, it got a little depressing.
Years ago, I was flying down I-5 somewhere around Seattle. I was in the 2nd or 3rd lane and couldn't avoid what I hit - a mama duck and her ducklings were attempting to cross all 5-lanes of I-5 during non-rush-hour traffic (if it had been rush-hour, everyone would've been stopped and the ducks would've probably made it safely across.)
There was no way for me to change lanes and I couldn't slow down very much due to the traffic behind me so, I just plowed on through them - I'm pretty sure I took out at least 2 of the ducklings with my Econoline van...
It depressed me a bit, but there were other people in the same boat - there really wasn't much that could be done...
Another time, I hit a dog with an '84 AMC Eagle - I was on my way to work, driving down a state highway at 55-60mph and this young black lab ran out from god-knows-where and right in front of me. I hit the brakes but it was too late - I ran the dog over and broke its back. The owner's neighbor said something about how this dog's owner allows his dogs to just run loose like that then put the dog out of its misery...
One of my teachers in the 10th grade came in late one morning--upset. She hit a German Shepherd on the freeway at 70 mph. Fido's head was stuck in the grill of her Firebird like a trophy....
This bird story---lucky folks in a couple of ways. First, not hurt bad. Second, the bird stayed together. I was pumping gas while I was in school, 1971-5, and one day this Jeep Wagoneer comes rolling in, with a hole in the windshield at the edge in the top center, with the sheet metal also bent inward. Out pops this 40ish gal in a then-fashionable pink pantsuit. She, and the interior of the Jeep, are covered in blood, crap, glass and feathers. She was holding it all together, but was clearly about halfway to amping out, with the other half just wanting to fill up and get on her way home. I just pumped the gas and told her I was sorry there wasn't much I could do for her.
The other bird story was motorcyclist vs. crow. Scratch one crow and three biker ribs.
I knew a guy who hit a deer on a motorcycle. He wasn't injured bad, except that the impact bent the bars back and pinned his thumbs to the tank. Fortunately he could still grab the clutch, so he didn't have to just keep cruising like that.
When I was a kid this family down the road was filming a flock of turkeys crossing the road when this truck just plowed through and got a good half dozen of them.
The video went on the news and the guy actually did get charged for it, not sure what charge they hit him with but it was all over the news.
My grandfather hit a hawk. It came through the glass & latched on to his arm. He managed to stop the car without a accident but he did have to kill the bird to remove its talons from his arm. He had huge scars from it. He hit a herd of hogs on another trip. The hogs totaled his car.
Have a story that didn't really cause damage but its interesting. I was driving down the blacktop back into town when huge flock of sparrows or whatever they are flew across the road, one turned straight on with my truck, hit the antenna and split clean in half! I turned around and watched the 2 halfs glide away from each other.
I was traveling west on I-64 one evening in that communist state of Virginia. I was following a big Oldsmobile and dropping over the mountain on the west side of Charlottesville.
All of a sudden I seen this gigantic ball stike the roof of that Olds and come at me. The ball hit the center and right side of the windshield popping two holes that looked like I had been shot at. That chicken hawk had a wing span that entirely covered the windhsield. I had feathers to come in both windows.
Well, it pissed me off. I had just replaced that windshild. I took off over the mountain, was probably running about 75 and crossed the path of a State Trooper. Needless to say, he was not too pleasant as I was 25 above the speed limit. He read me a riot act about the holes saying I was lying to him about the bird. Oh well, I took his *** to court and that is another story!
