Hmmmm, let's see..I have the gas gauge and dash lights working..now I need to see what I can do to adjust the steering for it has about 3 or 4 inches of play. I see tha adjustment nut on the steering box but before I touch that I think I will crawl under and hold on to the Pitman Arm while someone moves the wheel and see what happens. Maybe the tierod needs adjusting. I'm not too experienced in this area so perhaps I should take it to a pro.
Do that and also jack up the whole front end and check these things:
1. Put you hands on the front tire at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions. Try and shake the tire back and forth from there. If it moves, the wheel bearings are loose or bad.
2. Try the same thing with the hands at 12 and 6 o'clock. If the wheel moves, the knigpin bushings are bad.
3. Hold the passenger side wheel and have a friend try and turn the wheel to the left then right. If the tie rod moves, the tie rod ends are bad.
4. Take the wheels and with both hands push and pull at the same time if the wheel moves with the axel and the springs move from side to side, it's time for new spring eyes and pins - probably new frame to shackle bolts as well.
5. Put the truck back down and turn the wheel both ways. If the pitman arm moves but the wheels don't you need to adjust or rebuild the drag link - possiibly replace the pitman arm ball.
6. If the steering wheel turns and nothing moves, adjust the lash at the steering box.
My truck was changing lanes without my permission. Everyone of the items I mentioned was bad on mine and each one replaced dramatically improved the steering and ride. I replaced them all. I drove 85 the other day with no worries. Drives like a dream.
