I recently did a tranny flush on my 2005 F350 PSD. I changed the internal and external filter and filled it with 9 quarts of Mercon SP. When I checked the dipstick I couldn't tell if it was overfilled or under. Can anyone tell me how theycheck their fluid? Is 9 quarts too much? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. I went the cheap route and dropped the pan. I initially added 6 quarts and gradually added 3 more. Now I can't tell if it's too much or not. I definately don't want to screw anything up.
I am fixing to drop the pan and do a filter swap my self and the Ford dealer told me 8 quarts on my 99 f-250 V10..... But I plan on purchasing more just incase....
I used Mercon SP for mine . The dealer told me that if I'm just dropping the pan and changing the filters it would take anywhere from 6-8 quarts of oil. I'm at 9 now and it looks like it's at the right level. I have a TorqShift 5r110 tranny and you probably have something different....i think the 4r100 so it takes a different type of fluid. It should say on your tranny dip stick.
I changed my tranny filter yesterday on my 99 f250 Super Duty Lariat and it took 7 quarts to top it off when just dropping the pan. I got to say this was the cleanest I had ever dropped a pan due to the factory drain plug.. I guess ever 3-4 oil changes I may pull the plug and change the fluid.... They are not joking about the trans pan gasket being reusable either it is the best built gasket I have ever seen. I purchased a new gasket and filter at the local ford dealer.
It should be checked while HOT, engine running, in Park or Neutral. And it needs to be good and hot, so the fluid is hot enough to open the path to the external cooler.

FYI, you really don't need to drop the pan (at least on my '05), that filter's a trash filter and if it needs replaced they'll do it when they rebuild the tranny; if you know what I mean. Mine takes a little over 7 when I drain it from the plug.
