overfull transfer case

so today I decided to check my transfer case fluid.i opened the check plug and it was overfull.so I drained it and three quarts came out but only took two quarts to fill.i took it for a drive and checked my tranny fluid and its down a little from where it was when I flushed it last spring.not a quart though.so is my thinking that the seal is out between my tranny and transfer case correct?

Yep its the seal between the two, my f150 does it all the time when the tranny temp gets to hot, I installed a bigger cooler on it and it hasn't done it since..

ok maybe that's all that happened to mine because it hit 190-205 towing a trailer loaded with coal(right around 11,500) a couple times this past summer.as long as I keep an eye on tranny level it wont hurt will it.hate to have it all tore apart until tranny needs done.

I know the tranny wasn't a quart low so apparently it was doing it before I bought it two years ago

Mine has been this way for 2 years, I just check the trans and transfer case level every couple months and drain or fill as needed..

i agree. keep an eye on it, and if it only leaks out of the trans to the t-case a quart every two years i would not worry about it. just pull the fill plug every now and then to see if it is overfull . let it flow out the fill hole till nothing comes out, and it will be the proper level.

Now wait a minute...so you're saying that a leaky transmission output shaft seal will cause fluid to leak past the transfer case seal an end up in the t-case? Seems a bit far fetched to me.

I know it's a different transmission, but I had the output shaft seal fail on my '08 F250 a few months after I got it. Transmission fluid was all over the cross member, and it was gushing from the joint between the two. It did not go into the transfer case.

Just wanted to point out that 205° isn't too hot for your transmission. Anything up to 230° is considered normal, and it can get as high as 250° for up to a half hour at a time.

You are right about it being a different trans Tom as my 2000 F150 has the 4r70 and not the 4R100, and according to my trans shop its a fairly common issue, Mine had a extra 2 quarts in the T-case from the trans. I would have guessed someone overfilled it had I not done it myself the year before, Maybe Mark will chime in with his swag on the exact cause..
