Had to laugh when i saw this, did the exact same thing! and i didn't slam it shut just a little nudge.
Auto Glass place quoted me 375, then my insurance called and said i was covered, when i picked it up from the shop the new price was $1200.00 I should have taken the two receipts in somewhere for a discussion about fraud, but was happy to have paid nothing.
My six year old helped me with this mod over the weekend.
Last night I put in new glass and it was suprisingly easy. The window bolts in, it took about an hour if you don't count digging glass out of the ex forever. You remove the handle with I think a T25 torx. The rest of the trim pulls off. Remove the wiper arm and motor(10mm and 13mm I think), squirter nozzle, then whats left of the glass unbolts with a whole bunch of 11 mm nuts. Clean off the old sealer from the hatch. Run a bead of sealer (I used 3m bedding and glazing compound) around the replacement glass and bolt it in. The junkyard charged $150 for the glass, sealer was paid for already, and it took 3 newcastles to get the job done.
MOD finished today! Safelite came out and I had 3 Sam Adams Summer Ales watching him do it. Seems 3 is the going rate for backglass.
Funny...I called insurance today just on the off chance they would cover it, and, they did! Zero deductible even. The kicker: I was going to write a $336 check, but they charged insurance $512. I guess they have around $200 worth of paperwork to do?
Wow.. I did something just as silly in Feb.. Wanted to change the struts to the 2WD ones that are longer so I would'nt hit my freak'n head anymore. Well I presummed I had ample safety/support devices installed but of course all the safety in the world won't help when you have a GORILLA trying to evict a stubborn strut from it's home. I gave it a good whack and out comes the strut, the force of the affore mentioned whack jarred the support structure allowing the hatch to begin its descent just as the strut was on it's way north , again from the afore menioned whack. The strut was pinned between the edge of the glass and the D pillar for a mili-second which is apparently just the right amount of time needed for the glass to decide it was'nt going to take it anymore and "BOOM".. Out goes the glas..
I just today, as a matter of fact, had it replaced by Safelite... $339.00 installed.
I solved that problem long before it could happen.....
I lifted the truck and put the longer struts on so when she opens the gate- she cant reach it to shut it unless she closes the barn doors and climbs up on the trailer hitch......and she thought the lift was for nothing! HAHAHA
