Need ball joints?

I just took my '01 Ex in for tire rotation and was told it needed ball joints. It is a 4x4 Powerstroke with 182K miles. They estimated it as being around $600 for upper and lower ball joints on both sides. This is a garage I have trusted in the past. Is this a fair price? And how can I tell if it does indeed need ball joints? It drives as it always did and makes no strange sounds. Thanks!

That sounds like an average price for them.
I think my bill was a bit over $600.
It may drive fine but the tires will start wearing unevenly. It is very dificult to get an alignment also with bad ball joints.

At 182K miles, you definitely need new ball joints.

Be sure to get Moog greasable ball joints, not original Ford type non-greasable.

$600 is very reasonable. My cost, doing it myself, was just over $290. Took most of my weekend.
