I thought I would share this with you guys as well. I put a temperature probe in my filter box and tested 3 different intakes to see what kind of incoming air temps I was getting. I tested my hypermax kit, the factory tube that sits on the core support, and no tube at all. I had the truck nice and warmed up before testing and drove the same route/distance with each setup. I made sure the weather was clear with no wind/rain etc.. Here are my results.
The factory tube absorbs heat rather quickly at idle, it had reached 110* within the first minute of idling, while the others gradually climbed in temp. The hypermax kit also drops the temp much quicker when you start moving.
Thanks for the post and the data. I removed the factory snorkel from the core support and just left the 4" tube open in the engine bay connected to the Banks filter kit.
I plan to open up a 4" hole at the front of the core support and run a 4" duct from the front grill. Your data supports this as a worthwile mod. It also looks like some sort of insulated (or thicker) 4" tubing might also be worthwile.
What type of temp probe did you use? I would like to know my post turbo intake temps. I have a IAT gauge I use to monitor on my S/C gasser and thought about placing the sensor where I tap into the boost gauge (1/4 NPT) to see if some type of intercooler would offer any real gains.
