engine code computer

I have the 94.5 f-350 7.3 turbo diesel dually. i was reading that the code computer this vehicle has the obdII datalink coupling but it will have an eec iv (with no data stream) the read states i should replace with the 95 model level 1. my question is how do i identify what i currently have and would replacing it be worth the cost.

not sure how to identify what you have. but if you have a code reader you could plug it in to OBDII and see if it works. if you do need to swap it make it a hole lot easier to diagnosis cause then you can see the data stream

Some people call it OBD1 but it's an EEC4 computer. The exact same diagnostic procedures too.

My 94 has the eec4 connector under the hood which works and the obd under the dash. I put in a 97 computer once from an automatic and the dlc under the dash worked. It does not with the 94 computer.

You need to get the latest level pcm for a 97 but make sure it is for a stick shift. It has to be for a stick. Automatic computers will not work right.

No thats the IDM(injector drive module) the one you need to change is in the firewal under the brake booster

To get it out you need to lower the inner fender a little to get it out. Disconnect the batteries first too.
Search for a thread I recent;y started here on the right pcm for it from Oreilleys. It was 150 something dollars is all for the correct one. We researched it and found the right part number from them for it.

thanks for the info , i did some research the powertrain control module (pcm) is the computer im refering to. and when i change it will i buy a programmer/ codereader for the 97 year powerstroke or for the 94, i believe the new pcm will be the part from a 97 model powerstroke? i believe if i can get current information with a programmer from a newer pcm i would be in better tune, and understand where i needed to move as far as performance.

The 97 should be the best for it. Just don't forget to make sure it is for a stick shift. That's why I was saying to search out that thread where I was talking about it. We found the right part number for it. I can find it for you tomorrow if you can't.
With an auto trans pcm the clutch switch will not work. It also won't kick off the cruise when you press the clutch and the idle sucks real bad. Like right now you can take off without touching the gas. You can't with an auto pcm.
Just be careful if you go to a junkyard. Auto was a lot more common and they may try to give you one.

When you get it, don't buy an edge programmer. I tried it and a lot of others have too. They sucked. I'd get a custom chip done with multiple positions. Fast idle, and a couple tow and more hp tunes are what I'm going to get. I want one high idle for putting across the pasture at about 1200 rpm and warmup and one at 1600 for using my PTO. That would really make life easier for me.

well i think i have the information i need about this swap, im going to orileys tomorow for some gaskets, ill check on that pcm,i got a code mleo1 from that thread your talking about , well its the only thread i found that gave a code. ill probably need more ? answered about the programmer but i got enough things to take care of right now. currently i snapped a bolt off on thermostat housing so i get to remove the water pump to get it out. While i got the radiator out gonna have it rodded/cleaned by radiator shop. replace all hoses etc... and i think ill tackle the pcm and a downtube for the exhaust. thanks RRanch for the information.
