89 Ranger computer

I'm still working a problem with the engine's rough idle, but everytime I hook up the scanner to try and read codes it comes back as computer not responding. Could this be a computer problem? Wires are in good shape and when starting the scanning process it gives me everything to do. Should I replace the computer and test it again? Could this clear up my other problems with the engine? Thanks.

ok. the engine should NOT be running during the test. what you are supposed to do is warm up the engine to normal operating temp, then shut the engine off. after that you turn the ignition to on but DO NOT START. then try testing. i made the same mistake a few times too before figuring it out myself... it happens to everyone. give that a try and let us know!
