I replaced mine along with the cap, rotor, wires and plugs. That combined with a Dynomax cat-back improved my mileage from 12 to 15mpg. I also opened up the gap on the plugs to the biggest of Ford's specified range, maybe a couple thousandths bigger.
Well, I only had mine that way for a week or so before I put the MSD ignition box on, but I think it ran a hair better for that time.
You do have to widen the spark plug gaps a little to get a performance increase out of a better-than-OEM coil, but even then the increase will be neglible if the OEM coil was working correctly.
As the Ford TFI coils have a bad reputation to begin with, and the MSD's aren't that much money (plus they are of a slightly different design) (plus they give you something looking clean, mean and red down there), I would still consider it a worthwhile investment if you hope to keep the truck for a long time.

well i'm keepin the truck till the day i die so maybe it will be an investment for later. Maybe i'll go with the MSD and the blaster coil or something.
