Anybody with any info on changing a fuel pump in an 03 Ranger
edge. No hoist here so am wondering if anybody has had any luck in unbolting the bed and working on it in that manner. Seems it would be easier than dropping the tank. The replacement pump is even tuff to locate as this is one of those flex-fuel 3.0 engines. Auto Zone does not carry it and wont even order it. Ford wants $475. Have to check with Napa in the AM. Any information on this would be appreciated.
From my experience with gen 2 Rangers it's better to remove the bed to get to the tank. By removing the bed you can be into the tank in less than an hour. There are only 6 number 55 torx bolts for the bed and three screws for the fuel filler neck inside the fuel door. Keep track of what position the bed bolts come from because some are longer than others. Remove the tail lights, unplug the lights from the light housing and unthread the tail light wire harness from where it passes through some of the bed structure. Then it's easy for two guys to lift the bed up to clear the rear bumper and set it on a couple of saw horses behind the truck. If the fuel pump lock ring gets torn up during removal your local dealer should have them. If you're having problems getting fuel to the engine are you sure it's not the inertia safety switch or the fuel pump relay that is giving the problem? Did you find out about the pump yet?
Did you check the fuel pump inertia switch to see if it tripped and needs reset? It's near passenger side kick panel. Also did you try replacing fuel pump relay in relay box under the hood?

I was thinking the same thing. post #3 and #4 also mentioned this idea or maybe somethings besides the pump itself. I am assuming the OP is convneced it is the pump he did not respond to our questions!
Sorry about the late post here guys. The inertia switch was fine, but I admittedly did not chekc the relay. I do have to assume it was working tho since I have put the new fuel pump on and fuel flow is fine. Thanks
Thanks for letting us know it worked out well. Glad to hear it. Still seems unusual for a pump to give trouble at that low mileage point. Original pump on my 90 Ranger was changed at over 150k. I changed it just because of the age and mileage, it was still going strong. I hope your new one has a warranty. Thanks Good luck.
I have a 2003 Ranger Edge. For awhile in the Summer when the temps reached 90 plus degrees, truck would not start. Now it wont start at all. I have replaced Relay & Fuel Filter. Inertia switch not set. No noise from fuel pump when key is on...help anyone? I hate to pay $300. for fuel pump if not needed.
An old trick I have used more than once is to have someone try to start the truck at the same time I would slap the bottom of the fuel tank in the vicinity of the pump with a rubber mallet about 80% of the time the unit would run and the vehicle would start. Pretty good indication pump is bad it also lets me move vehicle in prep for pump replacement.
