I have a 2004 F150, 5.4L, 4x4 Towing package with OEM Reciever and 240K miles on it. On the reciever I have a mounting plate that originally had both a 4-pole and 7-pole light socket connection. Due to a bad winter this year I have some how damaged both connections to the point I can not plug a 7-pole plug into it. This is a issue that I need to correct being that I pull various trailers through out the summer months and boating season is here!!! I contacted a Ford dealer and spoke with the parts department. Accorrding to the VIN, it should have a 7-pole connection and a 4-pole adapter but when I bought the truck NEW from the factory it had both a 4-pole and a 7-pole connection. I would like to put on the new style connection which came out in '08 that has both the 4-pole and 7-pole with a heavy duty cover system and mount. The question is will this new harness assembly from a '08 or newer work on my truck and if so how hard it it to replace (is it just a pigtail with a plug) or should I just get the 7-pole (OEM) and replace it? Any information including part numbers would be greatly appreciated in the attempt to fix my trailer plug assembly.
I had the same thing happen to my truck....what I did was cut the old ones off and splice the wires back onto the new connector. I used something similar to this:
