Only the electronics are susceptible. as the EMP kills the chips and transistors through magnetic pulse. EMP basically erases their function program just as it will wipe out digital medium and tape medium.

Only in martian attacks aka war of the Worlds do starters actually crap out If the starter in the mini van crapped out whey did not the off the shelf replacement?...Now the starter will not function on a computer controlled vehicle as the computer signals the PCM to send power. In the car computer it wipes the programs from it rendering it useless...

But batteries and other inductive devices not interlinked with electronics will function. But today even the toaster has a chip........

Those pesky Martians... Always messing with a fella's starters and such. How is a guy supposed to get by? I hate Martians.

I did some reading, and it looks like you are correct. The starter motor, starter relay, and battery should be fine. The problem arises when there is a computer controlling all of the functions of the vehicle.

But what about a stand-alone ignition module, like the Ford Duraspark box? Shouldn't it be fine as well?

The solution is simple. Have Faraday Cages fitted to our vehicles. Then all sensitive electronic equipment will be protected.
..Or put the sensitive stuff inside a Faraday Cage inside the vehicle.

Three words: points and condensor.

Simple is good in a post-apocolyptic situation. Don't you guys watch TV?

Think about it, though. Even points and condenser will not save you from much. You still gotta get gas. Fuel pumps won't work. So I guess it starts by siphoning fuel from the newer electronics vehicles. Without a doubt, that fuel will have a high price and it likely will not be cash dollars. Surely someone will have found or modified a manual pumping device to get gas out of the gas stations. That fuel will have a high price, and long lines. And after all this, the amount of gas that is available will be enough for the most fuel efficient points-equipped cars to get probably 350 miles - that's assuming that there is no panic or chaos preventing them from getting on a highway and cruising for several hours. If I know humans well enough, there will be much panic and chaos. So I'd say they'd be lucky to get out of town. If you're in a big city, you can pretty well forget that idea at that immediate moment. Even if gas was easy to come by, we all know that after a month or so it will be no good if, of course, the supply even lasted that long.

The vehicle of choice, I think, would be the dirt bike because they are light, nimble, and fuel efficient, though they don't have as large a fuel capacity. Some even have magnetos which is another benefit because you don't have to worry about the battery. It will get you where you need to go with relative ease until fuel runs out.

If a disaster of that magnitude occurred, I'd forget about my gas powered vehicles and start thinking about how I'm going to survive, and try to figure out the best way to avoid the chaos and panic. I do not believe gasoline (or diesel) powered vehicles will be a good long term choice for survival. The gasoline will give me a strong bartering tool. The gasoline will run out but I might be able to trade it for more knives, or maybe even guns for long range defense or offense. So effectively, I will trade one thing that is less effective for survival for another which is more effective in the long term.
