So I've noticed this several times now and don't understand it, so I'm throwing it out there to you guys. See what you think. I'm driving down the road and the tripometer,(or whatever you've got on the display, MPG's etc.) will get bright for a few minutes and then go back to the same brightness as the rest of the dash lights. I've done system checks to see if it's in regen and it's not. (Because it'll get bright when it displays a message like cleaning exhaust filter, low fuel etc.) Any ideas?
I have noticed a couple times, when it is hazy or cloudy, that the auto-lights will activate to "on" which affects the brightness of the displays. And, when the lights are on--and a new message is displayed--the brightness on the message is increased for a short period.
I seen that happen too a couple of times.. at firs i was really worried and started playing with the dash dimmer but that didnt change anything.. it happens every now and then.
I only noticed it when it would regen. Driving down the road the message would be dim but then out of the blue it would get really bright. Light switch is in the off position during this time.

This is how it is supposed to work, even if you do not have AUTO lights turned on. It does use the same sensor the auto lights use, but it is supposed to act individually. If your headlights are on, the display will always be dim regardless. If the lights are off, the display will dim and brighten in response to the light meter at the front center of your dash. Try it out - cover that light sensor with a work glove or something and the display should dim in a few seconds.
I hate that sensor and think it is too sensitive (it needs some type of resistor to bleed off quick flashes of brightness when it's actually still dark out). This is the reason I don't use the AUTO headlight feature. At the hours I drive, the headlights go off and on about 8-10 times in the 20 minute drive to work. It's just plain annoying.
I don't use the auto headlights, but it's starting to look like it's got something to do with that sensor in the middle of the dash. I think it only does it when I've got my lights turned on (manually) maybe some type of short in the headlight switch? Come to think of it, it's also usually doing it (and driving me completely insane) when it's either just getting light out or just getting dark out.
