I know this has been asked before, but I didn't find exactly what I was looking for. Then again there was one 95 page thread that I'm still looking though...
Also I'm not sure this should go here or in the engine section. It's for a Bronco so... Mods feel free to move it if necessary...
Ok, so now that I have a 351 for my Bronco I'm trying to think of how to build it. The truck rolls on 33's and has 4.10 gears. I plan on adding shorty headers with a custom y pipe with 3" cat and cat back. I also plan on converting to MAF with a Mustang A9L comp...
I'm thinking about 275-300 rwhp as a goal. For the bottom end I was first thinking about going for a stock rebuild with hypereutectic pistons. Then I found I can get a new cast 3.850 stroke crank for like $300 to build a 393 using 302 pistons...
The top end is where I'm having my issues. I want this thing to be a torque monster so I don't want to go huge with heads, intake, cam, etc. I've seen mixed reviews on the Edelbrock 3881 manifold. Is it a good choice for what I'm looking to do? Should I just stay with a stock manifold? I have an AOD and need the TV cable hooked up. If I went with a GT40 or other type of mustang manifold and flipped it how could I hook the TV cable up?
For heads I was thinking about the E-Streets with 2.02 valves. Alternatively would be the GT40 aluminum heads. I'm trying to stay under $1k for a pair. Is 170-180cc's good enough to feed a 393? Should I just stay with a 351?
Cam... The block I've got is a 90, so I'm guessing that it's a flat tappet block. I was thinking of an Isky 262h cam. (.445/.445-262/262-208/208-108lc). It seems a little big for a 351 truck motor, but I'm thinking it'll be good for a 393. Or is it too small to reach my goal?
I'm going to run 24# injectors. Will I need to upgrade the fuelpump or will it supply enough fuel? Also what year did they stop using the frame pump? I'm pretty sure my 89 has one but I can't remember. Can I just install a 255lph pump in the tank and do away with the frame pump?
The Edelbrock truck manifold isn't needed either go with a regular Performer or Typhoon which is a Performer copy. That's a good choice on the heads but I dont know about the cam.. looks a bit small, I think it will deliver the TQ but it's gonna strangle the motor otherwise, I bet there are others that will give you the TQ and some pretty good HP too.
a custom cam grind would be your best option i think and money well spent.
going with 24# injectors wont hurt, Just not necessary. i recall the 19's handleing 300-350.
its the duty cycle they run at. if you crest the 80% duty cycle you want to bump up in size.
That AOD hookup is going to be an issue. I have no other constructive info for that. I agree the stated cam is on the small side for the stroker you intend to build as well as 180cc being the minimum head size. As for me I would go with 24 lb. injectors because with all the pieces you intend to use your engine should easily make 300+ flywheel HP.
I also highly recommend a custom cam to make full use of these pieces. Start with talking to Comp Cam and Jay Allen at Camshaft Innovations before spending money on any parts. They will be your best guide to what pieces you need to work with their cams.
Anybody have a good pic of the performer intake (or typhoon) showing the TB and throttle cable hookup? Maybe there's something out there in the custom world (lokar, etc) that I could use.
If not is the 3881 that much better then the stock intake? Should I go with the stock or 3881 if I can't use a performer intake?
