On a F250 SD 4wd front outer u-joint do you need to pull the steering knuckel off to get the axle out. And is there any C-clips in the carrier that have to come out.
There are no c-clips on the end of the axle shafts. The shafts will pull straight out after removal of wheel bearing assy. If vacuum operated locking hubs, replacement of knuckle seal and o-ring is recommended. If seals leak, no 4x4 operation. If manual locking hubs no real concern.
Yes, the steering knuckle stays in place. Remove the locking hub retaining clamp, then locking hub. inside will be a snap ring remove, with 3 washers ( steel, plastic, steel ) keep them in order. Remove the 4 bolts on the back of the steering knuckle that secures the wheel bearing assy. Disconnect vacuum line if present and ABS wheel speed cable. Remove wheel bearing assy. Pull out axle assy, use some force will be secured with big knuckle seal. Install reverse. Remember to check seals, could cause concern if vacuum is present.
We had two prybars in behind the u-joint and against axle housing and it was'nt moving. I guess we try again in the morning maybe spray some lube in the area where the seal will slide through. Thanks for the info.
I usually pry on the axle shaft right nect to the axle housing. there is a dust seal there to keep dirt out of the axle tube. Place the pry bar behind there and pry out. It will be a tight fit, and some force will be needed.
