Mu brother-in-law was a 30 year union member and president of his local. At one point in his career he left the union for a management position. After a while he left that position and went back in the union. He said that the management position taught him a lot about union workers. His words (not mine), Union workers are like Polish Rockets - they won't work and can't be fired."

Also, I look at it this way, I've got nothing else going for me right now.
It's my best option.
Have you ever thought about going to college or joining the Military? If you join the military, they'll pay for your degree. Then you can write your own ticket anywhere you want to go. I'm not against unions, but I have some friends who are in them, and it's a semi-permanent thing. Doesn't seem to be too much room for lateral movement, and after a while you'll more or less be "stuck" there, because even if you'd like to quit, because no one else will pay you that much without a college degree.
I personally would opt for the military - that way, if you don't like it, you can leave when your time's up and you'll be none worse for the wear. You'll also have plenty of flexibility to go to college, join a union, work at the mall, be a bum, be a stripper, etc.
Yes I was... I'll skip a few lines so you won't have to see how I feel about unions
I was in the UAW for 20 years. They are the most self-minded, egotistical, no-caring, scared people on the planet! If you don't fit their personal agenda, you're screwed! I got fired for 2 reasons, I couldn't perform my job due to an on the job injury, & when I was released to go to work, Boeing wouldn't let me do my job. Asked to meet my manager, he fired me for threatening to kill him... Long story, you can keep the UAW!
I got fired once for not joining the meat cutters union...did not know I was supposed to...I was 16, scrapping meat scraps off the floor and cleaning plastic tubs what the heck did I know about unions...
Still trying to figure out why the Boeing machinist's went on strike up in seattle during the early 90's...to paraphrase the newspaper..."We feel that since they are showing a profit we should get a bigger bonus....", I guess the 20 bucks an hour wasnt enough for them...I think it was resolved with layoffs...go figure
I've been on both sides of the fence. As a union member and also as non-union management. Been in some had core bargining sessions as well. It's nice when both parties can work together but durring the "cutback" '80's & '90's i've watched as the guys on the floor went from over 400 to less than 70. Now, please don't take this the wrong way, I don't want to offend anyone. When the company went back to Canadian ownership conditions greatly improved. Unfortunately, I bailed before this 'cause I just couldn't stand working another day for this idiot from Atlanta. What he did to those CAW guys on the floor was just not right. I was glad to leave & now i'm an Operating Engineer with the MGEU. (Manitoba Government Employees Union) and damn proud of it.
