Go to the engine forums and go back to Nov '09 and you will see a couple rod issues--from running them out of oil.

They have some issues, but spitting rods does not seem to be one of them.

Having said that, DO NOT OVER REV YOUR 5.4.

Ok so I take it that they dont have a problem with rods. So Im thinking that his 16 year old son with a new lic. might have be beating on it a little to much. Oil level was good. Thanks for the replys.

Are you saying your son damaged the engine? Still not clear. If my son did that he would have to pay for it.

No it wasnt my kid or truck Im just inqiuring for a friend and it wasnt his kid either. The truck cam to his shop with a bad rattle or knock and he had just put this engine in less than a year ago. Just wanted to know if there was a problem with other engines or not. We think it was over rev'ed.

Had to have been over-revved

The rods are pretty strong. I know plenty of guys running 10-12 psi of boost and zero issues. These guys are making 550-600 crank HP(~500 RWHP) on factory internals

Anything is possible when it comes to engine carnage. But these trucks have rev limiters in the pcm to help prevent this type of carnage. That's not to say someone didn't override the rev limiter with a programmer. It's possible that the rod was defective or more likely the rod bearing was defective or improperly installed. Perhaps that journal on the crank was undersize or oversize to cause an issue. But these engines are not noted for bottom end failures.

Was the engine rebuilt or a new crate motor placed in the truck. If rebuilt possible pluged oil passage upon rebuild or at oil pick up. Crate motor possible improper brake in period. I agree with tylus that stock bottom end can handle boost with out a problem. Last would be to have the engine dissassymbled and inspected for cause of failure, could be a quick fix or a new engine.

It was a low mileage used engine. And they wont have any programer to change any limits. Maybe a defect in the casting or maybe prolonged high RPM its 4wd and a 16 year old.

I'd bet money he was in 4wd low and was gunning the motor a ton. been there and done that...but I was smart enough to keep off the rev limit
