what impact can a broken piston skirt have on an engine. One says to use the broken piston, (replacements of the same variety are high dollar.)another says to replace it because it will cause premature failure and odd balance on the crank.
Are you putting a new engine together, or is it in a vehicle now? If it's a new build DO NOT use the one with the broken skirt. Open the lid of the trash can, place it inside, and close the lid. I'd also be suspect of the other pistons in the set. I wouldn't think that ONE piston would be that much. Think of how much more it would be if you have to replace a block, crank, rod, and head. If it's in a vehicle now, and it's not making too much noise, drive it, um, carefully.
Replace the broken piston.....it will only get worse. Try to determine WHY it broke so that the same doesn't happen again. There are a number of things that can cause it with improper steps taken in a rebuild. In a used engine I would say the most common cause is water. best of luck
if it's still in a car then get a new piston similar to stock. use the same stock rings. take the new piston head and old connecting rod. join them together. put the old rings on unless you feel frisky and want to hone the cylinder and measure it for new rings. put the piston back in. bolt it back and torque it to the crank shaft. replace head gasket. retorque head bolts. put intake back on. put oil pan back on. put oil in it and lay down some rubber.
