Broken Odometer
ive got the same issue.
from what i've read on the net if the speedometer still working then its probably the "worm gear" which is plastic and will fail with age especially if you hit the trip button a few times while its moving.. or it could be the electrical motor that turns the worm gear just stopped working. Once you get to it, if the gear is bad you can just order the gear instead of replacing the motor.
The fix is a fairly big PITA so i haven't done it yet, i'm not driving the truck anyway.
you have to remove the instrument cluster entirely and access it from the back-side, which requires removing the radio, half the dash, and finally the instrument cluster itself. After doing this though, its pretty simple it seems to replace the motor and/or worm gear. If you go at it pretty methodically it prolly just take a couple hours.
I made a thread just a couple weeks ago and didn't get any response from this board, and searched the forum with no luck, so look around. I can PM you a source for some info if you need but i don't know if its cool to post that kinda thing...
there is a good article on the net with pictures, if you can't find it by google then post back and i'll see if i can dig it back up. It was a step by step on a 95 model too.

Update on odometer
Yesterday I drove my truck to the salvage yard to get a part for my daughter's car. I got back in my truck and started to drive away and then I was shocked. My odometer and trip odometer were working again. I guess my truck got scared. After the various problems I have been having, it thought maybe I had decided to "junk it" at the salvage yard and decided to start behaving again.
I'm not going to tear into the gages while it is working, but I can assume now that it is not the gears but rather something electrical? What do you all think?

On the other hand, I'm of the mind that things should be fixed as they break, then when you decide to sell there will be less to fix, but why would anyone sell a ranger?
I have seen many You-Tube videos on removing and replacing the speedometer cluster on Ranger Trucks. The change dash light bulb videos are easy to find and show step by step how to remove and replace it !!!! If you can not find something you tube it !!!!!! they have video for everything !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clusters from 1995 to 2003 are all direct swaps. The only difference is 1995 ones have the check engine light in a different spot. I have a 2003 cluster in my truck and it's a 1997. The harness is already prewired for the tach,,,,,,,found this on a different site,,,,may try and find me a 2002 or 2003 for my 1999 truck,,,one with a tach !!!!!!!
