My truck died this morning while driving. It was toward the last bit of fuel in the rear tank so I switched it to the totally full front. Occasionally I'll forget to switch tanks until I feel it miss and this is what it started to feel like then progressed to a full blown power loss and finally engine cut off. I tried cranking like hell but no turnover. A friend stood by the exhaust during cranking and said he didn't think any fuel was going through. No smoke, no smell, no nothing. Any ideas yall? It's a 1996 7.3 with 162,000 miles. I guess maybe fuel pump went out. It's between the fuel filter and turbo in this truck huh? Please advise!
1) Is your tach moving when your cranking? If not, change out CPS.
2) Check fuse #22 in the black fuse panel in the engine compartment. It's a 30AMP.
3) Pop fuel filter lid off and make sure the bowl is full. You might have a restriction in the line from running the tank too low.
4) Check fuel pressure at the schrader valve. The pump could be shot... but these trucks are able to run on very low fuel pressure. Is the pump leaking?
Definitely take off the filter lid. If you have some transmission fluid or some diesel you can fill it full and it should start it. When I run a tank empty it's a real pain to get started if I don't catch it in time.
Ill be back at the truck in a few and try those things. I don't believe the pump has been leaking. Isn't their an injector pump and a low pressure pump on these trucks? Also, if I changed the CPS out 9 months ago is it likely to be that again?
I think it's just full of air since you said that tank was empty. On the newer powerstrokes with electric lift pumps you can just cycle teh key a few times to purge them. These, you have to crank them. It might take a good 2-3 minutes of cranking sometimes. Just don't rag on the started more than 15 seconds or so at a time. It really helps filling that filter housing with atf too.
Well I appreciate the words of wisdom. We'll be loading her up on the trailer here in a few hours or so. Once it's home then I'll be able to get after it but until then I just gotta sit here like a helpless blob. Anyways, I appreciate it again fellas. Anyone else speak up that may know anything as well!
A service manager at a tractor dealer doing some warranty work on mine last year told me the same thing about running it low and picking up trash.
It's a bunch of BS. If trash is in your tank and it's empty then it's just not as diluted anymore. It's still in there though whether full or empty and it will get sucked in.
This myth goes back to steel tanks that were just plain old cold rolled steel with no coating to prevent rust in the inside or outside. Leave one empty for too long and rust starts. Sooner or later it eats through.
These trucks in the first couple years had problems with the inside coating coming off but they don't have problems putting trash through to the filter.
That service manager I later found out threw a handfull of dead bugs and trash in my tank and tried to get my warranty denied because I pissed him off. He pissed me off taking three months to figure out that I was right all along. The fuel pump went bad. A 20 dollar fuel pump. He had his guys rebuild my injection pump, replace the injection pump, replace my gas tank after several cleanings then finally replace the fuel pump. The problem according to him was trash in my tank though.
NOT possible. A mechanic he fired for doing work too fast told me what really happened.
That selector valve is a good call. I forget about those all the time. Mine stuck the other day too. I just had to flip the switch back and forth a couple times and it went to the other tank.
Trying to anyway. I think it may have been a stuck tank selector switch. I toggled it a few times the started to crank it. It was actually pumping some fuel this time as the exhaust was smoking some and it was trying to turn over. Yesterday it wasn't burning anything. My batteries are weaker than cats milk so after a few tries she's dead again. It's on the charger now and gonna try again in a bit. I'm pretty sure it's gonna light up though. Changin the fuel filter either way, pretty gross. Thanks bud for all the help.
