I want to replace the OEM harness in my F100. I've not found one for a Ford, so I'm asking if anyone has used a generic harness that worked out ok for them? 30 yr old wiring makes me nervous.....
They don't make direct fit wiring harness for these trucks, so most people just try to repair what they have. Hopefully the aftermarket will step in sometime and start offering new wiring.
Yeah I've run into this prejudice before. I'll never understand why Ford trucks get no respect. If it ain't a 'bowtie' truck then you are on your own when doing restoration work. Well, I'm a retired Electrician. If I have to make my own harness, I'm definitely putting the new fuse block in the engine compartment, not under the dash.
It takes some time and patience, but these harnesses aren't all that difficult to keep in good order. The harness breaks down into connecting sections that can be removed from the vehicle independently if needed. The worst part of the job is getting the main harness out from in the dash, but I've found these dashes are amongst the easiest to remove. But unless some PO has done major hacking under the dash, you likely don't need to go there. The main problems I've found are with the engine harness sections where heat over time tends to break down the insulation used over splices. The other issue issues tend to be corroded sockets and ground connectors, and almost all of them can be bought at places like NAPA and in many cases LMC. The regular wiring insulation usually stays well intact unless something's been spilled on it, which is usually fairly easy to spot.
