more tranny problems

I've got a 2002 F250 7.3l 4x4 that I took in the mud and now it won't shift beyond second gear. It did this on the way home from being in the mud and caused me to have to replace the front pump seal due to it leaking bad. I did that and now no more leak but it still won't shift. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I searched and found others with this problem no solutions though.

Both batteries were disconnected for a week while replacing the seal... so PCM had to of reset.

You need to check for codes with a compatible scan tool. You can also use it in data mode and see if the PCM is asking it to shift.

I scanned it with a standard OBD 2 scanner but have seen other posts from you saying most scanners won't pick up tranny codes. Would something like the scanner in the link below be compatible. If the tool I need to perform the job is only $150 I'd rather buy the right tool than pay the dealer $80 to do it for me. If that isn't the right one, let me know what to look for. Thanks.

Okay... a few more symptoms I found out today. The O/D off button has no effect at all and it will not shift into 4 low.

When you had the trans out did you clean the plug on the passenger side of all the mud and moisture. I had that problem with my V10, I would think the Diesel 4R100 is the same.

I didn't clean it too much just shot some air in it, but I'll give it a try...

Still no dice. Cleaned every connector under there and no change.

That sucks, I checked out that scanner you were looking at, looks like it's a good one, I'd maybe go to the manufactures web site and see if they have a number you can call and ask if it checks for trans codes. I have a autoenginuity and it checks trans codes but it's a bit more pricey than that one.

I called them and they said it won't pick up any codes unless the CEL is on, and since tranny codes don't turn it on then I guess I'm SOL with that one.

I'll check out the autoenginuity and see what that'll run but its looking like I might have to take it to the dealer. I hope I don't pay them all that money just to tell me it shows no codes.

Unless a service center by your house will check for you cheaper that the dealer, maybe a trans shop, lots of times they will check you trans for free.

Yes, find a reputable non-chain transmission shop and ask then to check it and give you a quote.

I had a 4R70W in a 1995 F-150 giving me fits. It had 160k or so on it at the time. I took it to a good shop, asked them to check it, had visions of a $2000 repair bill dancing in my head......they came out and said the could fix it for $70. Replaced a seal and fixed a chaffed wire. I was so pleased I asked them to do a full maintenance on it also.

I'm getting a buddy to hook it up to Ford's machine tomorrow to check it out... but in the mean time I have theory is it possible the PCM still thinks it is in 4WD? In 4 low you only get 1 & 2 but it is geared down. If the transfer case actually shift back to 2WD you get regular gears just stuck in 1 & 2? Is it possible or am I dreaming it is that easy? If so how do I fix it though?

Like I said I've seen others describe this problem with no solution listed...

The trans will shift into all four gears in 4 low. If it doesn't, something is broke.
